Jordan lake is not great for boating! Water levels are unpredictable. One min its 5ft and next its 30ft then 5ft again in seconds! I hit a stump in the lake and lost my trolling motor! So I'm only going to boat at one place from this point on and not falls!! Hope this helps!
Cannot wait for summer and boating season to arrive so we can get back out on the lake. The lake is somewhat muddy but the ramps and parks are well maintained. Plenty of coves to anchor nod enjoy the day. Eagles are a common sight, so sit back and enjoy.
Jordan lake is a great place to swim or boat. However in the summer months it hosts the largest collection of bald eagles in the lower 48 states. There are also a large amount of ospreys and hawks at the lake.
If you are a boater and live in the area, you could boat here for years and not get bored. They are many nooks and crannies to find around the lake with plenty of places on the shore to anchor and swim. Plentiful wildlife, quite a few beaches for swimming and bbq'ing, and great camping.
The park is beautifully set in the center of NC. The lake is very accessible. Camping sites, bathrooms, and showers are handicap accessible and cleaned regularly. Food stores are within 20 minutes east or west on Hwy 64. It can be difficult to rent a campsite at the waters edge during holiday season so plan your outing well in advance. The park is patrolled and gives a comfortable feeling overall for overnight camping; traffic in and out of the park is restricted at night. After 10:00 PM it really quiets to a serene level, we have never had any issue of disturbance. If you are going to be camping- bring a leaf rake, plenty of firewood & a small bag to hang at your shower door. The park is clean but with wind and critters at night sometimes things get distributed. Great swimming areas, hiking trails, and fishing spots, all within walking distance of your camp. This park is very family oriented and maintained. Go online and view each campsite and location on the lake to make your reservation. The park service did an excellent job with the website.
Jordan can be unpredictable, it gets very crowded with all forms of water craft, and can be dangerous if you don't stay very alert. Boats hauling tubers or other inflatable items can cross your bow at high speed, or dump their riders into the water with high frequency. Experienced boaters tend to stay away from the beach areas and the water sport spots, and are less likely to be out at weekends. During the week its totally different and a very pleasant place to be.
You can not imagine how big Jordan Lake is! It is absolutely beautiful any time of the year. You can rent boats to take out on the lake for the day. There are beaches, trails, boat launches, fishing areas, picnics areas and more! Absolutely beautiful day with nature!
The campground at Poplar Point is fantastic! Wooded, natural, peaceful camping and affordable! Definitely will return!
Great park to visit during the week, I'm not so sure about the weekend as I've heard that it gets crowded. A lot of views and locations to walk around. There's a small play ground for the kids to enjoy and quiet. It seemed lonely when I was there. Free admission during the week and 6 dollars on weekend?
I hesitate to write this review, as we love love love this place....the lack of houses makes this lake an enjoyable one to boat on, ski, tube, etc. on and the boat traffic is pretty low except on the weekends as is to be expected.....the campgrounds around the lake are awesome as well - a great place for a family...if you want to drink and hoop and holler don't bother, the rangers will get ya.....like I said, a great place for families.....the fishing is usually good, however if the water temps are too warm forget it....speaking of fishing/boating, be careful and invest 5 bux in a map - there are sunken areas of trees and will ruin a prop in a heartbeat....seen it several times...lots of wildlife around the lake - eagles (yes, eagles - there is an eagle preserve on the north end), ospreys, deer, black vultures and an array of other wildlife that you will see....we spend at least a week here along with a several weekends.....
we spent weekend at the crosswinds campground. the sites were nicely spread out and shaded, and our site was just across the road from the bathhouse (sinks, toilets, showers). there is swimming beach access for campers only, but from section A, it would be a long walk-especially with kids. limited parking is available at the beach. ticks are very bad, and we had a bit of poison ivy around our campsite. it is a dog friendly campground, and we were around quite a few other campers who did bring dogs (which all barked off & on during the nite). if your site is near a bathhouse, bring a sleeping mask since the lampposts by the bathhouses are extremely bright. the bathhouses themselves could have used a bit more cleaning-not sure if they were cleaned at all one day & maybe it was because it is getting close to the end of the season.
We stayed at the Painter's Creek Campground at the Jordan Lake State Recreation Area. The campground was clean and quiet and the staff was friendly. We stayed over the Independence Day weekend and expected some noise and revelry, but were pleasantly surprised. We stayed in a travel trailer and did not visit the bathhouses. The camping sites are good sized and you are not very close to other campers, which is great. They are angled so that they are easy to back into. Will stay again.
We had a wonderful evening with David Griffin on his pontoon. He was great at explaining what animals we were looking at and explaining things to the kids on the boat. It was a wonderful way to spend an evening.
If you ever get the chance to rent a pontoon boat by all means do so!! It's a lovely way to spend the morning or afternoon exploring the waterways. Also, if you have a good group of people you can rent it for 30-40/person, just be clear that they wont cancel you reservation for weather and it does require a $500/hold on a credit card.
NC Rangers like walking around at night playing the campers against each other saying they have called in a complaint just so they can walk around and look into your campsite with binoculars. Complained to Jay Greenwood , who is over Jordan, he doesn't seem to care, so we will have to go on up the ladder. This was at Crosswinds, Poplar Point no different...Can see going back .. Still waiting on 2nd answer back from Jay, don't expect to get one
