OK, so it's January and the Bermuda grass is dormant, the weather is marginal but the sun is shining and the course is beckoning! What a great place to lose golf balls! The layout is typical of a Mike Stranz design, it looks impossible, but it IS playable. Even at this time of year, the course is a challenge-I am looking forward to returning when the grass is growing to play this stone cold beauty. Even from the tips the course is only 6500 yards but the greens are fast and the rocks everywhere make it a challenge to play. There are a lot of elevation changes and a diabolical meandering little creek comes into play on a majority of the course it seems! It is NOT for the faint of heart but, take your A game, avoid the rocks, and you will enjoy every shot. The staff is great and I can't wait to return. Put this one on your golf bucket list! It's worth the trip.
defintely an enjoyable coursedespite recent rain, the course was in very playable condition.greens were decent not great.curteous staffi dont feel like it lived up to the hype of 7th toughest track. tobacco road was more of a challenge and over all more fun. id play there again sure, but if its tot hill or the road, road hands down everytime
I recently came back to Pinehurst NC for another few days of golf after having my first 'Pinehurst Experience' 3 years ago. I had played Mike Stranz's Tobacco Road twice and Tot Hill Farm 3 years ago. This time I brought my GF instead of 'the guys'. Neither of us are great golfers...15+ handicappers...but who cares about scoring when you get to play a bizarre and fun golf course like this! I shot 48 on the front and a solid 43 on the back...on the "7th Most Difficult Course in America"...not bad. Take my advice, no matter what your handicap...play this AND Tobacco road...both are very challenging for the high handicapper but both are scenic, well groomed and a lot of fun! Tot Hill was a little beat up and could use a refurbishment of the greens like its sister course Tobacco Road. Tot Hill is also located about an hour outside Pinehurst...the drive is worth it in my mind. There's no driving range, a small putting green and the service isn't of the quality of Tobacco Road...but it is a definite must for any golfer who appreciates original course design. TONS of giant rocks everywhere that come into play, hazards and traps galore...dog legs and elevation changes...this has it all. It's relatively cheap...we got a great deal on 2 rounds and a hotel for 3 nights, but I understand that a round is about $50-$80 depending on when you play...good value. Bring LOTS of balls if you are a higher handicapper...I only used 3 though. This course could use a 'little lovin' with regards to grooming but is worth playing anyway. Book your golf through Tobacco Road...they will arrange EVERYTHING....hotel, golf, VERY professional and friendly and fast. Check out their website...and play Tobacco Road too....more fun, easier and BRAND NEW GREENS THAT ARE THE FASTEST, TRUEST AND BEST YOU'LL EVER PLAY.
It was an exhilarating and fun time going up and down, around and through the maze of holes at Tot Hill Farm. This course is one of the most enjoyable courses I have played in my 57 years of golf. I had my A Game which helped and a reliable GPS got me to the landing areas and the greens. It's hard to forget any of the holes as they are landscaped so well with boulders, hills, mounding and water. There was even a tunnel between two adjacent greens. It's not a grip it & rip it course, although there are some holes that allow one to let it rip. It is visually challenging on each tee to find the correct route for your shots, but it's there and in most cases there are generous landing areas. Y'all will enjoy the experience at less than half the Tobacco Road cost.
I'll start by saying Mike Strantz was a hell of an architect. Tot Hill is eye candy for sure. And for the money, it was an okay experience. But I have a hard time saying this is one of the best public courses in the state. Those are big expectations to live up to. I just don't see it. The problem is, the course is just frustratingly unfair. You can hit the ball exactly like you want and on the line that you want and still end up being really disappointed with the result on many of your shots. So many quirky hole layouts and blind shots. Even when you know where you need to hit it, the margin for error is often just so minuscule. It plays like a tough mountain course but with all manner of added (and really unnecessary) obstacles which takes the difficulty level way up. Luck really does play into it and so the experience wears out quickly and can become frustrating. If you want a unique round of golf and don't mind getting beat up (and losing a bunch of balls to the rocks) even though you're hitting the ball well, Tot Hill is for you. If you want a relaxing, more traditional round of golf, this ain't it. Props to the unique design. But that's all I can really say. As for the state of the course... the greens rolled reasonably well but were beat up in places. The fairways were generally good but at times inconsistent. There is no club house - just a snack bar with pretty weak food choices. One other quibble, the cart "paths" are brutally rough. I mean, the bouncing and jarring literally knocked my clubs off the cart once and gave me a headache by the back nine. I feel like key elements of the course need better maintenance.
Highly recommend a round of golf at this fair but difficult and beautiful course. Watch out for the rocks!
The course seems to have gone downhill since I last played approx. 3 yrs ago. They need to clean up around the course. Compared to average courses I regularly play in Winston-Salem ,and even the more pricey courses, Tot Hill falls short on quality. If paying to much for an average course isn't enough, then go inside and order some food. WOW!!! $5.50 for a hot dog and a pack of crackers? Are you kidding me? I will say that the staff was friendly and those maintaining the course were courteous and helpful. I was very disappointed.
Last month a group of us golfed the course. It was my first time but was prepared for the difficulty or uniqueness by my friends. Truly, course management is everything. Straight is the name of the game. I dropped a club regularly and had few problems. The views are awesome and agree that many of the Tees are elevated and the views are great. There are many hidden greens and if laying up is not your thing well you may get a lesson or two. The staff is great and very helpful and getting on for us was easy. Just over $50 a person and the course is in fantastic condition. I considered the course challenging and not what you see on many courses so know that going in and challenge your game and you will have a great day! Tot hill did not receive its difficulty rating for nothing. I will go back. Loved the day.
I was visiting a friend in the area, and he always raved about Tot Hill. It is like nothing you have ever seen! Hills, ravines, boulders, hidden greens and great fall color. Choose your clubs carefully, because shot placement is everything. Good Luck!
Ok, we were in Greensbourgh for a meeting. Some of flew in a day early to play golf. I spent alot of time reading about courses in the area and calculating the distance. Tot Hill Farm was about a 35 minute drive from the hotel. I told the guys on the way it was rated seventh hardest course in US. Of course, they wanted to go somewhere else. What a fun and wonderful course to play. I could save atleast six shots if I played it again. The first view when you drive up is, WOW, let me out and hit the fairway. Pro shop small, nice and efficent. Driving range good. Course fantastic and many doglegs. Layout exciting, I would say this is a must play course if you are in the area. I hope to go back and play it again. 14 Handicap shot 92, lost 2 balls. Want to play again.
One of my favorites that gets a little easier after playing it a few times. Quite a few blind shots but don't let that keep you from going. The place is beautiful. If you're going to the pinehurst area and want to play a unique and memorable course work this into your plan. It's worth a little drive out of your way.
Playing Tot Hill Farm will not only challenge you, but you will be amazed at the gorgeous layout, the plush fairways, and unique greens. This has been my favorite course whenever I've visited the Asheboro area. The staff is overly friendly, very accommodating, and always available to help you. You will get a serious workout playing here. But hey, we're supposed to be exercising. Do yourself a favor and make the trip. It's well worth it!
We had a fantastic morning at Tot Hill Farm Golf Club. We called up in the morning and easily got a tee time. In fact there was hardly any one on the course and we were round in 3 hours. The staff were friendly. I have played golf all over the world and i have to say there were some extremely interesting, fun and memorable holes on the course. I would say the course may not suit beginners but at the same time offers low handicaps a challenge off the back tees whilst still being playable by higher handicaps off the forward tees. Also exceptional value; we paid less than $100 for the 2 of us.
This was my favorite course on our recent golf trip to pinehurst. It's not only hard to golf ,but walking to get to the ball will really make you sweat. My husband would not agree with me,the course was a ball eater for him. I'm sure I enjoyed this course much more that him. Lucky me!
We are Mike Strantz fans and recently played Tobacco Road, our favorite course. Today we had the opportunity to tackle Tot Hill Farm and it was absolutely amazing. With recent rain, the course was understandably "cart path only", which added to the challenge. The topography is eye-popping, the greens are second to none in degree of difficulty, and finding a flat lie was not in the cards. We understand now why this course is so highly rated; it was a golfer's dream come true for us. The young man who greeted us was cordial, friendly, and knowledgeable. He even gave us great advice, as we learned later, on where to eat supper in Asheboro. We are not great golfers, but we had a great time, hope to return someday, and recommend Tot Hill Farm to any golfer who loves a stunning course and serious challenge.
