We try to go to Vollmer every fall for our pumpkins. We have a special needs teenager who is starting to get a little to old to be playing in the Back Forty with all the kids but he loves all the activities. The hayride is nice and the pumpkin selection is always good. We love, love, love the homemade ice cream. Definitely worth the drive.
My grandchildren love going to Vollmer's! There are lots of fun things to do and the ice cream is out of this world! We have been during both strawberry season and fall, either time is highly recommended!
My sons' school class went to Volmer Farms on a field trip this week and he was excited because he had not been there before. There were plenty of activities for the kids and a wide open space. There is another farm up the road a bit that we had been to before, but Volmer will now become our go to place to take out son. They also have great produce.
I can't select one time I visited, I take every opportunity to make sure visiting family and friends al get a tour of the farm, meet Farmer John, others who are on site during the visit---and for sure, taste some good things, shop, walk away with home made items. I worked seasonally for Farmer John for 9 years, as have my childlren, half the kids in the county. Part of the original family acreage of the late 1730s, John vollmer, his son, Russell, and quite often, Russell's kids, all work the farm---Several of the farm workers have been there since Farmer John's Dad;s time. Strawberry season is always fabulous, as is the home made ice creams, strawberry lemonade, other made on site treats. Added to this delicious-ness are blackberries, blueberries, and of course, all kinds of the best vegetables. Everything grown is organic--certified! Fall is pumpkin season, school tours, animals brought in from neighboring farms. hayrides, evening entertainment---and--folks having parties or reunions. Kids love the "Back Forty"--more than a few adults, too. Huge wooden toys for the kids---plenty of places to sit, keep a watchful eye--- (Won't mention a Dad who got stuck in the underground tunnel.) A fairly new inovation is the Christmas Pageant, -- carriage rides, living Manger scene, plenty of places to make a smore, warm your hands-- Santa's Village and Santa-- lots of lights to wander and admire. This is totally non commercial-- if you are expecting fancy motor driven equipment, etc, this is not it. Closest you get to that is the much loved Holstein cow train hauled around by a tractor. This is stepping back a bit to a time too many only have heard about. By all means, tell Farmer John, or "Uncle Russell" their redhaired "Cow lady" sent you.
I have heard it said that you can sing anything to the tune of Amazing Grace. Um, the following song (which I admit is poorly written, but only done in fun) doesn't work to that tune, but good luck trying. FYI, FWIW--we love this place. It's strawberry time--time to get pickin'Look at my watch, the tickers tickin'Got just a few short weeks to make my jamsFrom a recipe handed down from my Gram(muh)Chorus:When Farmer John said "No Tetrahydrophthalimide!"
