We really enjoyed seeing the Streb Forces show here. Great space. Recently renovated historic theater.
Took my wife to see the Nutcracker Ballet for her birthday. First we ended up at the wrong theatre , Midsummer Nights dream was playing and we advised the young lady with event staff that we were there to see the Nutcracker. She asked my wife and I four times were we for real and each time she got the same answer....yes, as if she could not believe minorities would attend the ballet. When we finally got to where the event was at memorial hall, I advise the event staff at the door we were there to see the Nutcracker. Without even looking at my paperwork to see where we were seated at, the male event staff made an assumption that we were in the balcony by saying I know where they are at, they are upstairs. I got heated and told him I picked my seats myself on line and I did not pay for balcony seats. The balcony seats were the least expensive. I paid for front row seats. He looked at the paperwork then and pointed us in the direction of the correct usher. Hey dude minorities do like the fine arts also. Remember that the next time you make an assumption. Once we were seated we enjoyed the show, the players and the music was very good. We will go to the ballet again, but not in Chapel Hill, we found a regional play theatre closer to home in New Bern and less expensive than Chapel Hill. That is the place we will support in the future.
We attended a blues concert and the program was excellent. There was a very talented group providing the pre-show sidewalk entertainment outside. It was like getting two shows for the price of one.We are not local, this was our first show at the CPA but enjoyed the experience and plan to attend again.
The student performances are pretty darn good here! The music selections are good and the conductor does a good job as well.
As impresario, Emil Kang has managed to bring in the most talented performers in the country if not the world! The only issue is a dearth of parking on campus. That can be difficult. But once you're in the hall, you are faced with the best of the best.
Taj Mahal, Trombone Shorty, Lyle Lovett/John Hiat, Chris Thile, George Clinton, Maceo Parker ... and that's just some of musical performances we've been delighted by this past year! Looking forward to Streb-Forces, Bela Fleck and the Alvin Ailey Dance Company over the next two months. As locals, we consider ourselves very fortunate indeed to have access to such a fantastic venue!
Great dance companies make the rounds of important venues around the world, and that includes Chapel Hill during the Carolina Performing Art series. Joffrey, Ailey, Kirov, you name it they come here!
I know they spent a lot renovating this space five or so years ago; but the lobby area is horrible! The auditorium itself is nice, with comfortable seats, decent acoustics, good lighting. The programming is often very interesting -- this past year's series in honor of the 100th anniversary of "The Rite of Spring" was very good: diverse, engaging, innovative. Waiting to see what they can do next year!
This is a classy venue that is not too big. I attended a contemporary jazz performance that was excellent. The theatre was full of enthusiastic patrons. There was wine and gelato at intermission.
