It is connected with the UNC at Chapel Hill. I liked. But I culd not walk through much for heavy snow and bitter cold. Winter is not a good time to vist Chapel Hill.
Franklin street is a great place to walk and spend some time window shopping. There are some amazing restaurants, coffee shops, ice cream/froyo places, a movie theater, an art museum, and lots of history along franklin st. We spent an evening walking along, stopping in used book stores and comic book shops, and eventually got dinner along the way.
West 411 and Carolina Café are very nice places to eat. Many varied types of restaurants including Indian and Mediterranean.
No visit to Chapel Hill is complete without a stroll down Franklin Street. It is lined with bars, restaurants and clubs. It would be hard not to find something to suit most tastes. On game days parking can be a problem so take the bus (free service) or use the valet parking.
Be sure to visit the Shrunken Head and Chapel Hill outerwear. Two great places to buy TarHeel souvenirs and memorabilia.
Franklin Street, like many other main streets in college towns, offers shops, eateries and many benches along the way to relax, maybe eat a quick snack and enjoy the scenery. The many historic buildings are a bright spot on this street and you can even see church steeples from many directions, walking or sitting. Nice place to visit and enjoy a bit of history, good food, and shopping.
If you are over 35 you'll be hard pressed to find the perfect anything unless it is for a younger family member. Still there are nice coffee shops and restaurants and it is pleasant walk.
chapel hill is not a typical college town. the old small town is filled with pubs and restaurants that cater students and their families. retires enjoy the ambiance of the village atmosphere and the available arts and entertainment to enjoy. the easy walking streets and college grounds are accessible and very relaxing.
Absolutely love this area. It was full of all sorts of neat shops, restaurants (both casual and upscale) bars and coffee shops. Enjoyed strolling and checking it out. My only complaint was the high number of vagrants begging on the streets..
Lots of restaurants - from casual to higher priced, ice-cream, frozen yogurt, cupcakes... good way to spend a lazy afternoon. Have some dinner, and take a leisurely stroll.. visit the museum or just hang out. Will avoid on Saturdays when the students take over.
During the school year, Franklin Street is thriving with UNC students, Chapel Hill residents, and locals. There's a great mixture of small shops, bars, sandwich shops, and all manner of restaurants, with some being excellent venues for foodies. I've heard Halloween night is crazy but have never ventured to town for the event. Summers are sedate with the lack of students but are favored by locals looking for fewer crowds.
Haven't been back in awhile since my school days. Great to see other than the price of the blue cup that nothing else has changed. Courtyard and upper deck create a great atmosphere for after the game.
Chapel Hill is just a special place. Between the restaurants, the shopping, the atmosphere, and the fellow Tar Heels, it is a place that has made me feel welcome and at home for over 35 years. There is no place I'd rather be. From Top of the Hill, Ye Olde Waffle Shoppe, Spanky's, Four Corners, or Vespa, Crooks or 411, there are so many great places to satisfy your taste buds! And you never know who you will run into - many famous alumni are always back because we are all part of the Tar Heel family :)
Franklin street from one end to the end other represents Tar-heel country ,local restaurants local boutiques , Local bars taverns all competing for that almighty Carolina Tar Heel dollar, During game days can be very crowded especially football and basketball game days , If you're planning a trip during one of the football or Basketball game days, parking is difficult at times, Come early.....
Franklin street in my opinion is a wonderful place to go walking or grab a bite. There is so much to do it has it all. There is a nice restaurant called Med Deli. There is a great pizza joint near by called the Mellow Mushroom I cannot tell you how may awards some of the places in Franklin Street. And I hope what i told you was good advice.
