hiddenite center lucas mansion museum and education center

We had passed the sign "Hiddenite Museum" several times when travelling on the I40 but somehow never had the time to go visit. This trip, while travelling on Route 64, we again came across a sign and we turned off the road to find this museum. We were so glad that we did. Such helpful staff who explained its history; interesting photographs and informative displays; and a beautiful doll collection that was a delight to behold - not only dolls, but toy prams and doll houses. This would be a great place to visit with a young (or not so young) granddaughter ! There is a small fee to visit some of the furnished rooms of the house but the doll collection and other areas are free.

The Hiddenite Center (which is comprised of the historic Lucas Mansion and the Educational Complex) is the premiere arts organization in the region. The staff is professional and courteous, and very knowledgeable about the history and arts culture in Alexander and surrounding counties. They work with the school system as well to provide arts opportunities for the children. And don't forget about the Hiddenite Celebration of the Arts on the fourth Saturday of September every year! Also, the Lucas Mansion houses the Alexander County Visitor Center, so be sure to stop in and get some brochures about local attractions and businesses.
