Homeland Creamery is a great place for a field trip for the children. My son's first grade class visited and had a very nice time. Ferne was an excellent tour guide! The hayride to the pastures and around the farm was fun for the kids. They were able to tour the facility where the cow's are milked and were also able to "milk" a fake cow. Probably the best part for my son was feeding the baby calf. They provided ice cream cups for the class and teachers/chaperones. We were able to also purchase milk and ice cream from the store. As noted by previous reviewers, the only restrooms are port-a-potties. There is a nice picnic area were the children could eat there lunches. The farm dog, Belle, was very kid-friendly! All in all, a great experience for the kids!
We went to the creamery with a group of 60+ for a field trip. The staff was not daunted by the size of our group and simply divided us into separate parties. Paige was our tour guide. She shows her love and enthusiasm through her informative yet fun descriptions of the working farm and cows. My toddler and preteen both enjoyed the tour. Their favorite part was feeding the baby calf a bottle. I liked the hayride with Fern since she points out the different pastures, cows and their uses. We all learned much about dairy farming. The ice cream (cake batter flavored) is sweet, smooth and creamy. I also purchased chocolate milk and homemade butter and have to say it is simply the best. Our trip was in September and the weather was perfect. All of the staff I encountered were pleasant and welcoming. I would definitely return here. Note: I did have trouble with my gps directing to this address. The bathroom facilities are portapotties but are clean.
Pleasant drive through Central Piedmont farmland to get to this creamery where we enjoyed delicious homemade ice cream. We tried the peach and the butter pecan. Both were delicious.....but we highly recommend the butter pecan. Outdoor seating-chairs and picnic tables.
We just wish this creamery was closer to home. The ice cream is very good and they have a good selection of items such as milk, eggs, fresh meat, cheese and homemade butter. You can see some of the cows as you eat ice cream under a large oak tree. Fun family stop
We were joined by a large group of adults and their kids on our tour of the farm -- you could say it was a FULL hayride! The farm is pretty self-sufficient and grows their own feed for their cows which produces a very high quality, hormone-free and antibiotic-free milk. The kids all loved feeding the baby calves, seeing the newborns and "milking the simulated cow" -- LOL!! Everyone enjoyed their DELICIOUS ice cream at the end! In fact, no one in our family could decide which kind of ice cream to buy at their little store, so we bought about 4 varieties to take home! YUM!!
Awesome place! We toured the farm with four other families, most of them having small children. All the children, and some of the adults, enjoyed feeding the newborn calves from a bottle and milking the "simulator" cow. The hayride offered a laid-back, wind-in-your-hair experience with fresh air and fresh smells - it is a working farm. Staff went out of their way to accommodate special needs, make sure we all had fun, and answered all of our questions. Overall, the best part of the tour was the homemade ice cream at the end. Be sure to buy some farm-fresh goods in the gift store or a nice custom-made t-shirt.
The ice cream is real. The milk is thick and creamy, not like the white, tap water sold in the grocery stores. (Although the Food Lion at Forest Oaks does sell their dairy products in the dairy case).
I visited with my 4 children ages, 2,4, 5, and 7 and they all loved the tour. It felt great to be on a farm that has been in one family for seven generations and to see that the continue to innovate in order to produce quality dairy products. We had a wonderful time on the hay ride, all learned something and even got to try some of their delicious ice-cream. I would not hesitate to take day-trip to this farm. I can also see that it would be great for a field trip. We did have a bit of a hard time finding it with our GPS so you may want to pay close attention.
We took our children on the tour of the farm and creamery. We got to see the various cows in pasture, ride a haywagon, feed a calf, see some farm critters and calves, and learn the importance of dairy farms in North Carolina. This is a great farm experience, especially for young children. Hand washing station and port-a-potties are the restroom facilities. Our fee was $6.00 a person, regardless of age. Visit the website. Friendly staff.
I was SO excited to go to this creamery. We booked weeks in advance for the "tour" thinking we'd be able to see how the milk was made or milkings or some of the behind the scenes workings of the farm....But No such luck. Once parked, (super small parking area, we had to double park blocking other people in which made us nervous), we paid the small fee of $6 each and waited outside. While waiting for staff to meet the group you pretty much got to see all you were going to see. There was a sweet baby heffer in a cage to pet and a couple of rabbits and birds in cages that you could look at. The field across the street held their pregnant cows so you could cross the street to get a closer look at those. Porta potties were available as was a self pump hand washing station. There were picnic tables in the shade for sitting and later, for ice cream eating. The hayride went about 1/2 mile up a dirt road and back, stopping four times to look at a few cows here and there and the farm owner's mini donkeys. It was the same road we had driven in on so we'd already seen these stops so it was a bit of a disappointment. There was ample Time to ask questions and the woman was knowledgable though there wasn't much presented so there was not much to discuss. There were many "rules" for the hayride about touching the hay and turning around and talking that as a teacher and a mom were beyond the safety rules necessary. It kind if took what fun there was to be had out of the hayride. After the drive up and down the driveway/road, we disembarked and each child was allowed to put his or her hands onto the bottle to feed the calf for a few seconds. (While the woman held it) it was rushed because the cow was a fast drinker and there was only one bottle. You then had the option to pull on a fake udder under a barrel painted to look like a cow into a bucket. (Though during all of these short stations there were again a lot of rules about staying in a line and on certain areas of grass etc. when really there was nowhere to wander off to.) The BeST part of the tour was once we were seated we were each given a hoodsie size cup of vanilla ice cream to enjoy. (With a little wooden spoon) The ice cream was wonderful...beautifully rich and indulgent! In my opinion you could skip the "tour" since you see the exact same things driving in and as you sit to eat the ice cream. Anyone stopping in can put the baby cow and look at the rabbits and turkey. We drove an hour and a half each way... And we were disappointed. If you live within a few minutes the ice cream would be worth a quick trip... There were assorted flavored inside to buy.... But I would not suggest this for a family or field trip.
Homeland Creamery is a true gift to the community! They sell dairy products to local restaurants and grocery stores, and they have their own store selling milk, butter, and ice cream at their farm in the country. This has become part of our family tradition to visit Homeland Creamery anytime we are driving south on NC Hwy 62. They have some small cages with rabbits and chickens (and sometimes a turkey) which children can watch on days with pleasant weather while you eat ice cream outside. The quality of the ice cream is the standard by which I evaluate all others!
I live within 1/2 mile of this place but I have tried many other similar places in the area. Homeland Creamery has the best Ice Cream around! I have eaten ice cream here many times over the years. The texture is smooth and creamy with loads of flavor. You can feel and taste the butter cream in their recipe. Prices are pretty good and service is good. The butter here is also really good and has lots of flavor. You gotta try this place!
I took my 6-year old son out to Homeland Creamery for a quick visit and some ice cream. We didn't get to do the tour but, we did sit outside, look around at the cows and ate some delicious ice cream. We will often buy their butter at Lowes Foods.
My daughters K4 class went to Homeland Creamery on a field trip. The employees are very knowledgeable and patient. We learned the differences in some of the cows, enjoyed a lengthy hayride, the kids got to help feed a calf, and see where the cows are milked. At the end, everyone got ice cream that was very good. I highly recommend bringing you wallet and purchasing some food products in the store to enjoy st home.
