My parents used some of their season tickets to take my husband and I to see "Promises" at SART while we were visiting them in Asheville. They enjoy the season ticket program there particularly since they can choose to allot their tickets as they choose instead of being locked in to certain showings and so they're able to take visiting friends and family as they're able. We enjoyed walking around the Mars Hill campus before the show as well. Our seats were in the front row, but there wasn't a bad seat in the small theater. My husband and I were very pleasantly surprised at both the play itself and the excellent performances. The play was a new work and many of the actors' bios said they were local and had recently begun pursing their performing careers or had returned after long hiatuses doing other things; we never would've guessed from their excellent work. I never would have expected to find this gem in Mars Hill; we look forward to seeing another performance there in the future!
Shows are great, theatre intimate but in need of a facelift on the inside. Professional actors and wonderful audience. SART also one of few who try to pay interns by selling raffle tickets at each show.
I've seen a couple of shows here and would go more often if I lived a bit closer. Beautiful little town, Mars Hill. Acting was excellent. Loved the theater space.
Its almost hard to believe that you aren't on Broadway, and yes, they are that good! Its actually better in a way because of the small (compared to big cities) venue which makes the audience feel a part of the play.
What a wonderful gem of a theatrical experience! This small playhouse astounds with its talent and stage design. It is much more than I could have hoped for!!
Excellent theater in small college town, all seats are very good! Senior rate available, variety of plays! A local favorite
Southern Appalachian Repertory Theater is a gem nestled in a tiny town 18 miles north of Asheville, easily accessible by limited access highway. Plays are presented throughout the summer season, usually a two week run for each. The casts are a mix of professionals and students from Mars Hill College school of theater are are of the highest quality. The musicals of the 2012 season (I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change and Light in the Piazza) highlighted some of the best voices I have heard anywhere, including NYC. The ticket cost is nominal, and there are both matinee and evening performances. Really worth the drive to experience great talent in a small, historic theater - every seat is viewing perfect.
Actors are fabulous, some have come back to the area for the summer season for years, and we look forward to seeing them each season. And new faces appear often from the local college theatre program-and they're great. It's a small intimate space-no bad seats. One new commissioned play is performed each season, and the other performances are a mixture of musicals and old favorites. Excellent directors and support staff.
We thoroughly enjoyed the theater and play by SART. It happened to be "The Death of a Salesman" which is somewhat depressing. The cast was excellent! Also enjoyed walking around the campus of Mars Hill College after the matinee.
