This is a small, reasonably new winery, using mostly Muscadine grapes, but also blueberries, blackberries, and peaches. Homemade wine is a tradition among the Lumbee Indians, and the Locklears, whose ancestors can be traced back to the time of the Revolution in this area, are continuing that tradition. I was pleased to meet Mr. Charlie T. Locklear today when I stopped by, and he is obviously a man who takes pride in what he does. The website has more info on this small but promising winery, and you can order off the website. Or plan a visit to Pembroke, NC, home of UNC-Pembroke, once an all Indian school, and drop by and taste a few samples at the winery, since it's more readily accessible from Pembroke than Maxton.
