the barber that cut Andy Griffin's hair as a child was still cutting hair until August 2014 and still comes by and sits with customers and chats it up. He is about 90 years old.
My mom and I stopped in at Floyd's Barbershop after our Snappy lunch. There were a couple of regulars sitting against the wall. They weren't waiting for a hair cut. They were just there for chit chat. "Floyd" is a little hard of hearing now. We assume it was his daughter who was there to help him if he didn't hear parts of conversation or to suggest that he tell a particular story. Everyone was so welcoming and wanted to talk with us. We were invited to come back for his 91st Birthday party at the barber shop that was to be the next week. All I can say is he was such a sweet man with a sweet smile. I had to give a hug before we left. He was happy to let me get a funny picture with my mom in the chair. He snapped on the clippers like he was going to shave her head. He goes in 7 days a week and stays as long as he feels able. I think meeting people and telling stories at the little shop keeps him going. The shop with all the photos like wallpaper on the walls, the barber chairs and other stuff around were neat, too.
Just walking in this barber shop is amazing, you don't have to get a haircut if you don't need one, just talking to the people in the shop gives you a view into Americana. You can wander through the town with no fees attached. Beautiful drive through the North Carolina mountains to get there.
We were so excited to visit this barber shop. The gentlemen inside were so sweet and willing to talk and visit with us since it was not a busy time of the year. They asked if I would like to sit in the chair and have my picture taken, which I did and I in turn asked to take theirs! Great pics to see on the walls and 2 very sweet men to take you back in time!
ok this is the place floyds barbershop was modeled from on the andy griffith show. that alone merits a five rating. a must when visiting andy's birthplace of mount airy n.c. oh and pick up a t-shirt while you're there.
By far one of the nicest and kindest Gentleman I have ever met. The first time we met Mr. Hiatt was in 2004. I sat down for a hair cut and 45 minutes later after all the visitors, stories and laughter my hair was perfect. Because he never would ask, I said how much do I owe you. He replied 6 dollars. Over the years he has become a good friend. I wish the world had more outstanding citizens like Mr. Russell Hiatt! AKA Floyd.
I met Russell the 90 year old owner. He was who Floyds character was based on in the Andy Griffith show Mayberry. He told me to sit in the old barber chair and I got my picture taken with him. Russell is very friendly.
I guess we have seen to many Andy Griffith shows and thought the town would be more like Mayberry but was disappointed that is wasn't the small quiet time the we had imagined.
Floyd Sr. was there greeting visitors and having pictures made. Floyd Jr. was there also. He informed us of lots of facts about his dad, Andy Griffith, and Mayberry. He was a great historian. I must see while there! I loved it!
Really a nice place to walk in and see and it is a working barber shop still to this day, so if your man needs a haircut by all means go in and get one
just like in the tv programs Floyd was in their talking to guest and answering questions. there was a lady doing the hair cutting.enjoyed the visit.
If your in the Mount airy, Mayberry area and your walking down Main Street Floyds barbershop is a must see. There's no admission because it's a real barbershop. It's filled with all sorts of history and the walls are lined with photos of all the people who's ever had there hair cut there, famous and not so famous. We spotted THE Floyd sitting inside and we went in. He's like 90 and a little hard of hearing but it was still fun to listen to stories of yesteryear. Did he really cut Andy Griffiths hair, who knows, who cares, it's all part of the lore of Mayberry. If your walking down Main Street make sure you stop and take a look.
You feel like you have taken a step back in time when you stroll the streets of downtown Mt. Airy. We saw Floyd's Barber Shop, and many other stores...wonderful way to spend an evening.
My husband and I went in thinking it would be nice for him to get a haircut there. Well the barber is of on Thursdays but Floyd was there. He doesn't cut hair anymore, but he let Roger sit in the chair where he used to cut Andy's hair and take pictures with him. At 90 years old he has a lot of good stories and he likes to share them. If you are ever here, stop and say hello to Floyd, you'll be glad you did and so will Floyd.
Fun place to look into the past, go on it, get a hair cut! Visit the stores down town, have lunch, chat with the locals. A great stop on our road trip!
