I love to go the Cemetery on Memorial and Veteran's Day. They have the flags set out at all of the grave sites. My father and grandfather are buried there, the ground keepers always keep the grounds looking great.

I had no idea that a National Cemetery was even located in Salisbury, NC., let alone the site of a former Civil War Prison. We visited on a whim and found the history of the prison so interesting.

Beautiful restored theater. First class productions. Many actresses and actors travel over an hour to participate in productions. Amazing talent

Often on my trips to Salisbury I will stop here. Not too many people understand the gravity and the fortitude that went into being a soldier in the 1860's. Over 30,000 POW's were housed within the confines of the walled area with a small creek as their only source of water. They died by the thousands between 1864 and 1865. I will always consider it a privilege to have served the same country they died for.

Very thought provoking, of interest to Civil War buffs, and anyone who needs reminding of what a toll any war takes on our men and women.

The cemetery was very well maintained. Flags had been placed at each marker in honor of Memorial Day.

It is hard for me to pass through Salisbury without visiting the Cemetery. This place is such a history lesson. The 11700 Union prisoners that died and were buried in trenches are well marked with a marker at the end of each trench. The historic cemetery is located at 202 Government Rd and the Annex cemetery is at 501 Statesville Boulevard behind the VA Hospital. Both are well worth a visit but the historic cemetery is a must.

This past summer, my father in law was buried in the National Cemetary. I was very impressed with the service and the respect that was given to my loved one and to my grieving family. The grounds are kept immaculate. For Christmas, they have a wreath laying ceremony where the Veterans are remembered and each branch of service are recognized. Those who come can take a wreath provided by the cemetary for their loved one's grave. Even in the rain, they did not skimp on the ceremony.

If you are a War Between the States or just a history buff, this is a must see. More unknown American soldiers buried here than at any other place in the world.

Just off main street, this somewhat hidden cemetery can be an emotional stop for someone that understands what it represents. It is beautifully maintained, and since the mill next to it is no longer creating a cacophony of noise, it is always peaceful and quiet. Just looking over the hundreds of white headstones always makes me become emotional...but when you read the story of the thousands of Union soldiers buried in mass graves on the site...it can be almost too much to bear. Anyone with any appreciation of history, and of the sacrifices so many have made for this country, should spend some time walking among the headstones.

Dedicated in 1874, this is the final resting place for veterans of all wars. Buried in 18 trench graves are 11,700 Union soldiers who died at the Salisbury Confederate Prison during the Civil War. Office open 8 am - 4:30 pm Monday - Friday. Grounds are never closed.This self-guided driving tour is a must for Civil War buffs. Although nothing remains of the Salisbury Prison, the tour poignantly provides insights into this period of our history. Three monuments erected by the State of Maine, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the U.S. Government stand in the Salisbury National Cemetery as a tribute to the Union soldiers who died while at the prison.

I believe that the Salisbury National Cemetery is definitely a sight to see. As the headstones of passed soldiers appear to roll over the mounds for as far as the eye can see... it is definitely a serious reminder for us to always remember the people that gave their lives for this country.

This is a meticulously maintain civil war site which is also a national cemetery located on the grounds of the Confederate Prison located in Salisbury, NC. There is a small museum which is open limited ours and the parks has numerous monuments that may be visited. Additionally, it gives a brief history of the prison. This is a wonderful stop that may be made which compliments other historic Salisbury tours.
