This is one of those museums where you are treated to a guided tour by the person working the front desk. Arrive with a child and he or she will receive a scavenger hunt sheet that will keep him or her busy after the tour. The doll collection is extensive and well catalogued. At the back of the small museum is a large electric train set. The guide opens a gate and you are allowed inside the layout.
When we held a Doll & Toy Show in Salisbury in September the Museum invited all of our Vendors for a visit after our Friday setup. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed seeing the vast variety of dolls, toys and model trains. The exhibits were well done. You can spend hours here going back in time to your childhood as you see such things as Roy Rogers cap pistols, operating model train layouts, antique, vintage and modern dolls, trucks, cars and all types of other collectible toys. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Beth and her Mother are dedicated to preserving the past and sharing it with others. You must visit this great place. It's just across the street from the NC Transportation Museum which is another great place to visit and on our list for next year when we return to the area.
We all look for that special place to bring back the best memories of our youth and this small but wonderful Museum gives completley. The displays are constantly changed and every visit turns out to be different than the one before. I truly wish I had more children (young and old) to share the dreams included with each display. And to make it even better, cost is the lowest I have ever encountered for the quality of what is on display. A real bargain for the soul and pocket book.
Great diversity of antique toys, dolls, and a miniature circus. Only $5 to enter, and worth every penny. Nice staff and items are displayed well.
I planned a trip for my Girl Scout Troop to Spencer Doll & Toy Museum because I found out that they had a display of Girl Scout Dolls. I wasn't expecting much out of this trip. This trip turned out to be one of my favorite things to do with the Girl Scouts. Both of the ladies there were extremely nice and knowledgeable. The girls had a wonderful time. They got to take a tour, do a scavenger hunt, get a prize, and make paper dolls as well as listen to a story. Our girls ranged from 1st graders to 6th graders and all of them enjoyed the visit. I will definitely be putting it on future Girl Scout calendars. There is something on display there for everyone from doll houses to dolls to toy cars to a working train.
Tucked into the quait town of Spencer, NC is a charming museum of dolls, toys and miniatures. The Spencer Doll and Toy Museum is a family friendly destination that will delight people of all ages. Working trains, model trucks and cars will fascinate and dolls and miniatures from 1850 to modern will delight visitors. Exhibits change every few months so you may see displays that include area artists, Ginny dolls old and new, super hero dolls, collections of 1950's cap guns and holsters and a rare Schoenhut circus display. The circus is one of my favorites because it is large and contains wooden figures that I have never seen before except in photos. You can ask for a tour of the museum or you can just look around and take photos. Plan to spend 1-2 hours looking around. School groups are invited to visit by contacting the museum. It would be a great place to bring young people to show them the history of playthings that were used in their grandparents and even their great grandparent's lifetimes.
This is a great place for people of all ages.I had no idea there was so much history in toys. I've learned sooo much. Also, the museum is very well-kept and the tours are awesome. I will definitely be visiting again soon.
I wanted to share a very delightful and educational visit that my family and I had a few weeks ago when we visited the Spencer Doll and Toy Museum while touring the Town of Spencer. We were greeted right away and welcomed into the museum. We were then given a private tour of the museum where I went back in time to when I was a young girl with items from Dolls dressed in beautiful clothing to Toys and lifelike trains running in different directions that made you feel that you were really back during that time. One of my favorite groups of items from "back then" as I will call it, was the display of paperdolls. How I could just feel so warm and cozy as I forgot about the everyday struggles and just relished on my "Yesterdays" while walking around looking at the different sections of the museum. Normally I don't write things like this, but I was so very impressed with this attraction, that I really wanted to share it with others. I can't wait to go back later and carry some of my friends, and at $5.00 a person, they can share some of the great memories that I did while touring the Spencer Doll and Toy Museum.
