Robert, who spent time in Napa has done an excellent job with his reds. If you like bold, dry reds...this is the place for you. You must try Barrel X, Synchronicity, Merlot, Reserve Cab, and Mountain Mama Madness. We have helped them bottle before, it was fun!
I'll admit that I'm incredibly biased about this place since this is where my wife and I got engaged. The facility is beautiful with grapes in front and a beautiful old building housing the winery. It's a family run business, where the spouse and children of the wine maker work in the winery. I've been really impressed with the wines. Robert, the winemaker, has a PhD in wine making and tries to create a diverse slate of wines. He's also a gifted educator, so feel free to ask as many questions as possible. Personally, we like to go out on the outdoor seating, get a bottle and just post up for the day. They also have a wine club that gets 10% off the wines, if you're more of a wine drinker. It's truly a luxury to have something like this in Guilford County!
I made this winery a destination visit since we are trying to visit as many of the NC wineries as we can. Since I am not a wine snob (only Napa or Italy will do) kind of person, I always go withthe expecations of finding a great locally produced wine. The tasting room is rather small but the ability to sit and have your wine selections served at a table is quite a nice change from mostwineries. They have a very large variety of wines & my friend who has a more sophisicated winepalate than I do had a hard time choosing which ones to buy.Our hostess was very knowledgeable about their wines. At the end, we were allowed to taste thier sangria. Oh my! It was wonderful. So much so that we bought the "kit" of three wines so we can have thislater at our next ladies luncheon. I bought wine for gifts as well. Overall, it was a very pleasantearly afternoon.
This is a wonderful place for a day trip from the Triangle or Triad area. The tasting room and the grounds are very nice. We thought the wines were some of the best we have had in NC. We used a Living Social deal so the tasting was very reasonable for two. Sara, the daughter, in the tasting room was very knowledgeable and personable even though the tasting room was very busy. We had packed a picnic lunch, bought a bottle of Riesling and had a very enjoyable day at the outdoor picnic area. They also have a covered fire pit for cooler days.
I recently visited Stonefield Cellars for a tasting. The tasting room and ambiance is nice, the wimery staff friendly, but the wines ....... well, it is North Carolina and not California. I'm certain the winemaker does his best with locally sourced grapes, but the wine just doesn't taste good in my palate when considering the price and quality. Several white and red varietals and blends are avaialable to taste and purchase. If making this a destination stop, bring some food, buy a glass or bottle and enjoy the outdoor seating area. There is a fee for tasting and this fee does not apply to purchasing a bottle, as some wineries promote. There appears to be several special event music opportunities every month.
Attractive venue, OK wines, not so great hospitality. The tastings are $7 & $10 pp, depending on your selection. Located in the Piedmont (West) region, this winery offers all 5 grape varieties - which is 1 of 3 that do in this region.
