Played a small tournament round on Sun. 3-8-15 thru GSGA/MyGolf on MacKay/Stewart courses and found fairway and greens to be in really good shape after the really harsh winter we just completed. Also was treated to a very nice Sunday brunch $13.95+tax, inc. soft beverages of your choice, prior to golf. Omelet station, french toast, blueberry cheese blintz, shrimp-n-grits, Absolutely to die for Glazed poached Salmon, smothered in every possible steamed vegetable you could ask for, bacon sausage ham steak and tons of desserts. Full salad bar all served in a nice Country Club atmoaphere, overlooking the putting green and 9th hole of MacKay course. If you play golf or eat big Sunday Brunches or both this is a must stop.
Played Thistle in January 2015 but unfortunately the course was still a little wet from all the rain the week before so it was cart path only. Course is beautiful with lots of water but it is not a course where the water others you on every shot. Some houses around the courae but never in your way. Bunkers are well situated and the sand is perfect. Greens were good but not perfect. Overall one of the best courses in NMB with a beautiful club house and great staff.
Excellent golf course. Unfortunately very wet due to recent rain, but all in all a course I would come back and play. Played McKay and Cameron. Parred the toughest hole #7!
Played Thistle the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. After 3 solid days of rain the course was as expected very wet but still playable. The new greens on the Cameron 9 holes were outstanding. They still had plenty of speed and rolled true despite the rains. Played the Mackay 9 as well and the greens in that 9 were slower as they still had a older Bermuda that had been over seeded. Those greens are supposed to get redone in 2015. Overall a very solid golf course with some excellent holes. The bunkering on the Cameron 9 frame the holes very well and offer a good test. Will Definitely play here again especially after all the greens have been redone. The only reason I didn't rate it a 5 star was the difference in the greens.
This course has beautiful scenery, and the fairways and greens were in excellent condition the day we played. There are plenty of challenges with lots of marsh areas, water, and bunkers. The Scottish-themed clubhouse is eye-catching. I will fault them for not having hole diagrams on the scorecards, and not even a diagram posted by each tee box. They must want to sell their course layout booklets. Also, the staff around the carts were neither very friendly nor helpful.
I believe this is the nicest kept course within a 10 mile radius. The fairways are generous. Very picturesque. First class facilities and help. Greens are true and relatively fast. Cement cart paths.
27 holes of well manicured fairways and greens that can be played from a variety of tees. There is a significant amount of water and ample bunkers. The clubhouse is spectacular with a British influence. There are only a few homes on the course which makes for a more natural setting. The change in ownership in the past 18 months made it affordable for all. This is a golf experience no to be missed.
While visiting a friend in the Sunset Beach area, we decided to go play Thistle. What a wonderful experience from start to finish! We were immediately greeted in the pro shop by Sue from Baltimore. She was professional and very knowledgable about how to play the course…offered good tips for a few of the more difficult holes. Once out on the course, it was in as great of shape as we had heard it was from tee box to greens. We'll definitely be back!
We stopped at this course on the way back from another in the area to see if we could get in another nine before it got dark.We got a nice twilight rate and the starter got us out without a problem. The course was in nice shape and had some interesting holes. Definitely not an easy course, but one that I would play again.
Played Thistle on a recent trip to Myrtle Beach. We had a couple of groups. The golf course was in really good shape. The greens were nice and rolled true. This is a beautiful facility. The course is well worth playing. The pro shop folks were friendly. Personally do not like the way the bag drop area was being run. They have 3 9s and were quite busy on the Saturday morning we were there. They would not load our clubs until we were almost late for our scheduled tee time. This leaves you with a feeling of being rushed so you can actually make it to the tee by your scheduled start time. After the round, we went into the grill to have lunch. We (7 of us) sat down at a table and quickly came to realize that if we wanted service, we would need to go up to the bar and order. First 2 items I picked off the menu I was told "we are out of that". My next question was "tell me what else you are out of and I will decide what I want". I pretty sure my comment was no well received. Geez, it is a Saturday and the weekend before one of the largest tournaments in the Myrtle Beach area (consuming 76 different golf courses) and they have not prepared for the crowd they were going to get that day....bad management/decisions maybe. Again, great golf course. Maybe just consider eating and drinking afterwards somewhere else.My rating is based solely on the golf itself.
The course is definitely not boring, a lot of interesting holes, but definitely not easy for the average golfer. Even though it is a semi links course If your ball ventures off the fairway there are a lot of places where you will lose it.A write up I read touted the great number of Scotches served at the bar of this Scottish style course. I thought I'd finish off the day with a fine single malt, but found they only had two choices and no single malts. The barmaid said since the new ownership they have all been cleared out. Hrrumpf
We have been coming to Myrtle Beach for the last 3 summers and played and least 5 golf games each time on different course. Based on the 15 golf courses or so we I played, Thistle Golf tops them all. Great challenging course, well maintained, beautiful greens, great clubhouse, good service, etc...I am surprised at the negative reviews, but as we did play in the afternoon and it wasn't crowded. We will play this course again.
We have played here at least 3 times each year for the past 4 years. The last occasion was in Oct 2013, just as ownership changed & we were keen to see if anything had changed on this visit. We did notice that the tee times had changed from 12 mins apart to 8 mins apart but as we were paired with a father & son on vacation & playing with hired clubs (& not regular players) we weren't waiting on our shots. We were pleased that they had only booked 9 holes and so were left on our own for the second nine.We played the Cameron & Stewart 9s and they were in very good condition. Mick the starter was a pleasure as usual & the bag drop guys were the usual hoots! The main difference was in the Pro Shop. We usually get a warm welcome, but the guy behind the desk was surly & terse. Not rude but different to our previous experiences. And as per previous reviews, it would have been good to mention that we should buy a Course planner as there's no GPS. Yes we will be back again because we enjoy our golf here & hopefully the niggles will have been ironed out by then.
The employees were arogant, rude , unprofessional, and lied...we booked the round and I went in their clubhouse the day before we were to play and was assured our rate was $29.00 per player when we showed up they wanted to charge us $85. Then they said $49 and we should be glad to get on such a nice course and people are happy to pay $85 to have this experience. After n half hour we got on for $29.00....the course is nondescript, plain jane, and just ok....my $8 hot dog was served on stale bun and the condiment table was covered with gnats.....stick your happy to pay $85 where the sun doesn't shine
First, let me say that I have been coming here each Spring for 15 years with my brothers and we enjoyed it each time. Never again!!! When I booked a tee time for 6/13, I asked if they aerated the greens. They said they would put us on the two nines that have not been aerated, When we paid and we went to the starter and said "They promised to put us on the two nines that have not been aerated". He said that is what we are on - Cameron and Stewart. We played Cameron and the greens were fine. Once we got to the first hole on Stewart, we found out that the greens had been recently aerated. I immediately called the clubhouse and asked for a full refund, The person I was speaking to said no way - he would give a 9 hole rain check. I told him that was unacceptable. I said that we may have played 9 holes already but they got us out here on false pretenses. We went back and forth. I was there on vacation and decided to deal with it when we finished, I went into clubhouse to speak to the head pro after our round. He was no where to be found, This person said check here - we did then this person said check there - we did. However nobody knew where he was. I grabbed a card with the head pro's e-mail address. When I got back home, I e-mailed the head pro (Dustin Powers) to try to resolve the situation. I thought for sure that a classy place like Thistle would do the right thing and give us a full refund. Dustin told me that it was a corporate policy not to give refunds and then offered a 9 hole rain check. I then asked for a 18 hole rain check. I was refused. Everyone has choices in life. Dustin chose not to do the right thing and I chose not to play there ever again! Believe me - I am going to tell everyone I know the way we were treated,
