We stopped in on a Sunday afternoon. There is lots of open space for playing sports in a group. There is a visitor's Center as well. We found several different artists that captured this lighthouse and are even considering some original art of this light house.
Went to Bodie lighthouse on this trip too. Not open to climbing this early in the year. Great photos, and nearby beaches. Great side trip not too far from Kitty Hawk.
Lighthouses are fascinating structures. As a sailor I treasure their daytime appearance or their nighttime identifying lights so there is always a romantic or even a security assurance that you are on the right track! Visiting lighthouses reinforces that trust you once built as an offshore sailor before the days of GPS and affordable radar. A satisfying comfort to visit navigation locations you once trusted with your life!
We attempted to see all the lighthouses in the outer banks and found each very interesting. The people at each lighthouse are very knowledgeable and willing to answer questions.
Pretty to visit, although we were unable to climb in off season. Small gift shop with books, magnets, info regarding this and other lighthouses.
The Bodie Island Lighthouse is a wonderful place for photography. The lighthouse and the setting is simply amazing. The wooden boardwalk-style walking path offers additional views of the lighthouse and an opportunity to check out local wildlife.Note: The lighthouse is not open for climbing the winter.
This was my second visit to the lighthouse, the first being about 10 years ago. I enjoy seeing all the lighthouses on the Outer Banks of NC. I especially enjoyed this visit, as I like photographing the lighthouses, and it was late afternoon for this visit. The late afternoon sun gave the lighthouse a nice orange glow, and fog was wanting to roll in and out. I stayed longer than I had originally planned, because every minute or two, the fog gave a lighthouse a different look. I was unable to climb the lighthouse, as it is in the middle of winter, and they do not allow climbers to enter the lighthouse until spring.
Even though the lighthouse was closed for the season, you can still walk around the compound. My husband and I walked to the "boardwalk" to the lookout looking over the marsh. There was geese and ducks. It was quiet and serene. A few people were there to bird watch and talking to them was fascinating. It's free when we went ( February) and it was worth the trip.
Like most other places in the area, the lighthouse is closed until April. We were told it was because they couldn't afford to staff anyone to monitor movement within the lighthouse. However there were 3 staff members inside and with quite a few people on site that day, believe they could have made enough profit for it to be worth it. Oh well. It was still a nice place to visit and also nice that it was much closer than Cape Hatteras to our stay in Nags Head.
Easy to get to and a beautiful lighthouse. The boardwalk looks out over the lagoons and marsh for great bird watching.
This is one of the best lighthouses in the world! We have had a view of it on several occasions from our decks & porches and it is just lovely. We have lots of pics upclose and @ a distance... LOVELY!
Historic lighthouse near Nags Head. All the lighthouses in OBX are great to visit and gives you the closer feeling of how dangerous to navigate it was years ago. Take time and visit as many as you can. All are different and certainly adds to your fun in OBX. I believe Bodie Island Lighthouse had a makeover about 2013. We visited in 2011 / 12 and drive by it every year.
A beautiful location with easy access. The site is very well maintained and we were greeted by a knowledgeable Ranger. It was mid-afternoon and a full moon seemed to be next to the Lighthouse. It was off-season so couldn't climb the steps but still an awesome site!!!!
Love the history and quietness. A must visit place while at outer-banks. We visit every few years and love the drive and peacefulness.
What a beautiful stop. Very dog friendly (they even have a water fountain especially for dogs). Beautiful views and very well maintained boardwalk.
