The historic neighborhood was all decked out for Christmas. It really was lovely. Almost every home was beautifully decorated

I truly enjoyed walking around the Oakwood neighborhood. Each house different. Each with a history. You could tell the inhabitants really care about their area. Beautiful examples of so many different architectural designs. It is a photographer's paradise.

I walked from the Joel Lane House to the Mordecai Historic area. On the way I took a detour through Historic Oakwood. I did not visit the cemetery, maybe next time. I really enjoyed walking through this neighborhood. I love old homes. Each one has its own character and charm. I visited in November so the weather was nice and cool, perfect for walking! Get out of your car and walk around to really appreciate this lovely old neighborhood.I passed through in the middle of the day and I felt perfectly safe. The people I encountered were friendly. I was not mugged once! (I am a 60 year old woman and I was alone.)There are some nice neighborhood restaurants and bars. I would love to go back and try the Side Street Restaurant. They only take cash or Wake County checks. It looked very promising.

You can get a free map of the neighborhood from the State Museum of History. It will give you houses to look for and the style, year, who owned it and what they did for a living. Very interesting to walk through and see all the charming homes and read a bit of history about them. The homes are being restored and the neighborhood has become popular again.

There's not much in the way of knowing which homes are really historic (I didn't see any plaques on the homes), and they're sort of scattered about. I like that many of the Victorian homes are painted brightly, though!

Historic Oakwood is a veritable open-air architectural museum. It was suggested to me by the manager of Pharaoh's @ the Museum as I was dining there. Not knowing what to expect or look for I went and explore. I'm so glad I did. Walking through Historic Oakwood is a literal walk in the past. One minute you’re in downtown Raleigh with all its skyscrapers and hums of the car engines. The next minute you’re in the shades of the densely wooded residential area with only the chirping of the birds as the sound you will hear. You’re left wondering if you’ve left North Carolina. It’s like time stood still in Oakwood. As you walk along you marvel at the different architectural styles of the houses reflecting the individual taste of the owners. Turret accents of houses in Baronial style and Queen Anne Variations and spires of Victorian tenements peek through the trees’ thick green foliage. This quaint neighborhood is only two blocks away from the North Carolina Museum of History in the center of downtown Raleigh. To read my review of Historic Oakwood, visit https://www.facebook.com/globetrottingfilipina or http://globetrottingfilipina.wordpress.com/2014/09/20/exploring-historic-oakwood-in-raleigh/. I highly recommend a visit. You will enjoy looking at the houses.

This neighborhood is an extensive neighborhood of old houses that date from 1820 to the early 1900's. It is on the National Register of Historic Districts. There are well over 100 homes in the neighborhood each with their own name and history. The best way to tour this area is on foot and the best way to do that is to have "A Walking tour guide of Historic Oakwood" from the Society for the Preservation of Historic Oakwood. This guide gives a very brief history and information on each house in a street by street guide. It is a very extensive guide especially for free. It is available at the Raleigh Convention and Visitors Center downtown which has brochure also at the satellite location between the Marriott hotel and Raleigh Convention Center.Houses are of the Italianate style, Second Empire style and North Carolina vernacular style among others. Many are colorful Oakwood adjoin Oakwood Cemetery (see separate listing in Trip Advisor) and also the Quality Grocery the oldest grocery store in Raleigh is in the neighborhood which now is a restaurant. . If you like old houses this is a great place to wander around.

I saw a lot of promotion for this area. Seems like those who are trying to pump up downtown tourism see this as an "attraction". Not much here.

We did spend time driving through the historic area. There are some very interesting homes. Many have been renovated and are just beautiful!

Fabulous cottage in an historic neighborhood. Lots of houses to see and near downtown. Perfect for a getaway. Eddie and Kay were gracious hosts

Oakwood is a beautiful old neighborhood with lots of well-kept historic homes. What surprised us was just how "un-urban" the area felt. You're right outside of the city center, but the neighborhood feels like the suburbs. The architecture in the neighborhood runs from Victorian all the way to early 20th century Arts and Crafts.

Was expecting so much more based on these reviews. The historic homes really aren't in this area - more by the capitol.

New and old. The houses are beautiful and neighborhood is charming. A great way to see it is on the Segway tour so that they can explain the history of some of the homes. It's also nice just to drive through it.

Triangle Glides, Segway tour company in downtown Raleigh, offers a wonderful tour of this beautiful and historic final resting place of many local figures and Confederate Soldiers. The graves from the Battle of Gettysburg give pause, as do the many outstanding sculptures and monuments.

Incredible old neighborhood with varied houses from late 1700's to 1930's. 2013 tour included this fabulously decorated and restored mansion that was worth the whole trip. Highly recommend doing the Christmas house tour if you love looking at period houses fully restored and in restoration mode. Lots of great ideas as well.
