By far - this is the most moving experience I have ever had at any memorial. It looks beautiful as you drive by it - which I did many times before I actually spent time walking around inside. Once inside as I began to read the letters engraved into the pillars - a true appreciation of a soldier's life engulfed me. I went back again when my brother came to town - once again an incredible experience.
this is one of its kind memorial! must visit moves you!You can walk through it and read the personal letter to and from the veterans before they died. It is a different kind of experience. It is open yet it engulfs you.
This veterans memorial is a collection of 25 Indiana limestone pillars. Each one is 40-feet high and includes the names of Bartholomew County residents who were killed during wars over the last century. That alone makes the monument worth seeing, but there's another element that really sets it apart. Each pillar includes pieces from the soldiers' letters or diaries. These intimate looks into their lives brings home the reality of war. It was one of my favorite things we saw in Columbus, a powerful way to honor the soldiers who gave their lives.
