The Schofield house was the first two story brick house and also the first tavern built in Madison. It was never used as a Masonic lodge, but rather was the birthplace of the Grand Lodge of Free & Accepted Masons in Indiana on January 13, 1818. Well worth visiting!
The fact that this place served as a Masonic Lodge and provided accommodations to early travelers make it unique among the properties open to the public for tours. The history is well-documented and there are interesting artifacts, but it would be nice if research were ongoing so that what we're told could be updated from what we've heard for the past decade or more.
Great place to see. All the docents at all the houses were great.
I'm not sure how to review this historic house. The house is an interesting tavern of the 1800's that had boarding facilities. It has been well restored and the grounds are nice. Supposedly haunted, it is currently a masonic lodge. My "but" isn't a reflection on the house but rather the long time live in caretaker who has done an excellent job of fixing up the grounds and gives an "interesting" history of the house, and this is where the "but" comes in, made my wife and I feel uneasy. I can only say I was glad to leave. There is one flight of stair that are fairly easy to climb. This might be one to skip.
