The Greenway has always been pretty well kept up and tidy when I've walked. I like the scenery and lots of places to park your vehicle to go for long walks.
Even though it passes through the middle of the city it doesnt feel like it.....there are a few places where you cross busy streets, but its nice and quiet most of the way. Unique over passes and scenery along the way. Definately recommend for family walks or bike rides.
The Cardinal Greenway is great for biking, walking, and yes, even geocaching! I've taken my kids on certain stretches of the Greenway where several geocaches are hidden! We all ad a great time!
The depot has a gift shop and sells maps for $2. The map is way better than the one online. We used the bike trails website in combination with trail link to plan our trip since we were coming from outnof town. If you have time get the one from the gift shop to figure out where to park. The parking lot on Industries road appears to be closed. We parked at Union pike which is nearby. The trail is marked in 1/2 mile increments so it's easy to tell how far you have gone.
This lovely trail that runs through eastern central Indiana is very well maintained and scenic. It runs through small towns and farm fields, along rivers and highways. The Muncie trailhead is a restored railroad station with lots of local information.
My husband and I just took our six-year old grandson on the Cardinal Greenway. He learned to ride without his training wheels this spring and was elated that he could ride five miles on the trail from the northern part of Muncie out into the country. The pavement is smooth and the grade is slight.
we stopped at the Greenway 500 bicycle shop to get our tandem tuned up, and we mightily impressed with the knowledge and service. The trail is nice, flat and the surface is in good condition, a good place to ride on a cold windy day.
Nice safe ride to bad it will get you lost around memorial drive or did I miss a sign? This is a well taken care of property and the trail goes on for miles and miles. Just remember that without a chase vehicle you have the same ride back so pace yourself.
This trail is an excellent way to stay healthy and to get rid of the "Freshman 15" at BSU. Walk, Jog, Bike.... it is all not just "cool" but encouraged, conventional and safe. This is a very beautiful and scenic area to enjoy. It is pathed and goes along the river through the downtown Muncie area, Minnetrista, Ball State University, outskirt areas of Muncie and through tranquil farms, woods and country. Please check it out during your time at BSU!
This trail goes both north and south of Muncie for about 50 miles total. I have not traveled the entire trail only about 30 miles of it. There are two portions I particularly like--the portion north of Muncie from McGalliard AV to Gaston. It is very scenic. There is parking on the north side of McGalliard right next to the Greenway at an office complex. It is not all that obvious but Greenway users are allowed to park there. There are also parking lots next to the Greenway at various intervals along it. The other portion I enjoy is thru the south side of town that goes through what was once heavily industrial Muncie until the end of the city. The best access to that portion is at the old C&O train station on Broadway AV. The portion further south is not too interesting because it parallels US 35 so there is a lot of traffic noise and not a lot of scenery.
You can run, walk, jog or ride your bike and exercise without the worry of cars. It is a very nice way to see the beauty of Muncie and the surrounding cites.
Many uses. Very well maintained. Easy access.Scenery and nature abound. And it's a safe, quiet place to ride and walk. When the RR Right-of-way was abandoned several years ago, a few farmers between Gaston & Marion reclaimed their land rights and demolished the rail bed before the GreenWay came to be.I don't believe there was any malice at all, but it does necessitate some routing along country roads for a piece. No big deal.
We frequently ride sections of the Cardinal Greenway. The Depot in Muncie to Gaston is a 20 mile, round trip, very flat ride with a little restaurant to eat, rest, and return ride to the Depot. On US 35 near Blountsville is a trailhead that we like to take back northeast towards Muncie to the Medford trailhead. Between the Prairie Creek Reservoir trailhead and Medford there is a side trail to a viewing platform managed by the Red Tail Conservancy--the platform is the shape of a red tailed hawk, but you must look closely to see it. The favorite section of the greenway starts off US 35 at the Losantville trailhead going south towards Richmond. Easy grades, plenty of tree lined sections, and long stretches away from the highway, all of it through rural landscapes. Truly beautiful. There is a neat arched bridge for gazing into the stream below near Economy and off to the south of the trailhead in Webster there is an old school. The side door on the south is open to the old shower rooms downstairs. It's a good bathroom stop with running water and a drink vending machine near the gym. We love to stop, sit on the front steps and take a break with water and a Cliff bar. From there go on to Richmond, or back to Losantville. Biggest problem can be lack of maintenance at times. Some weeds have gotten overgrown and laid over on the trail and walnuts in the Fall are a hazard. The only place we routinely encounter dogs is just past Economy at one house back a lane. If you are riding by, they are no problem at all, but do not stop and talk or get off your bike. Go on down the trail a tenth of a mile, then stop for whatever reason. The trail is used, but not over populated at all, especially between Losantville and Richmond. Just remember trail etiquette--bikers especially should clearly announce themselves approaching someone from the rear with "On your left!" Walkers should be courteous and not span the entire width, or allow their dogs off the leash. During warmer months there are clean, well maintained portable toilets at the trailheads.
I think this is one of the best bike trails I have ever been on. We rode from Richmond to Muncie (42 miles). The trail was well-marked with a lot of areas to stop for a rest. The scenery was very nice in mid-fall. If you are a bike adventurer, you must ride this trail.
Long paved rail trail. Only drawback is that a 15 mile section remains unfinished and you must ride public road. However, experienced riders will have no problem with this as road has lite traffic and is relatively flat and straight---good visibility for bicyclist and motorist.
