We count Harmonie State Park in the top five campgrounds we have ever camped in. Staff is friendly, grounds and shower house are immaculately kept and there a safe, family friendly feeling abounds. We have camped here several times and are already planning trips for Spring 2015!
Campgrounds where very clean and modern. Was there the week before Halloween most campsite where decorated. They have a big to-do the Saturday before Halloween 600 plus kids.
This is a beautifully maintained, large state park. It has a 200 site campground which includes some electric hookups for RVs, and a tent area. The bathrooms are decent. A few playgrounds are scattered on the property. Beautiful 2 bedroom log cabins can be rented. There are 10 or 12 of those. I rented one September and loved it. Hiking trails, a boat ramp, a swimming pool, mountain bike trails that, that according to my husband, are outstanding, round out the amenities. I love to drive to the park just to walk the roads and trails. It is a peaceful setting and you're likely to see wildlife as you go. I also enjoy riding my bicycle from the town of New Harmony to the park. There is a great loop within the park with a challenging hill that bikers can enjoy. I always make sure that I ride my bike to the boat ramp picnic area so I can sit on the picnic bench for a while and watch the river flow by. If you love nature, this park is for you!
Because we have never visited this State Park we wanted to make sure it was included on our trip this time. We were surprised and delighted to discover this is an almost untouched natural area (still being developed?). The paved road took us all the way to the back of the park. We had a map and chose an easy trail (#7) that led to a frontier cemetery. We never did find a marking for Trail #7, but found a horse trail that took us to the cemetery. Signage could use some improvement - didn't see many other trail markings either. We were also disappointed to discover that the Nature Center was closed on a Sunday afternoon. We didn't see a Camp Store - wondered what campers did when they needed supplies.
We stayed at the campground over the 4th of July weekend. Had a great time. Couldn't tell you who the camp hosts were, but by the signs on the sites, there was one at each loop. On site nature center, swimming pool and great hiking and biking area was some of the things to do within the park. Kids were running free, as their parents felt it was safe enough to do so. So, if you are a couple, plan on a lot of children at the park. This is definitely a family campground. sites were larger than most and well maintained. Most sites are 30 amp. A few 50 amp sites are available, along with pull through, near the front of the campground. Bathrooms were clean, but a bit older and could use updated showers. DNR made regular trips throughout the campground, which gave the feeling of security. Quiet time was respected by everyone. I think this is a great park to camp.
If you live close to Harmonie State Park, lucky you. If you do not I would not say it is worth a long drive to visit. It is in a beautiful location, great views of the Wabash River, nice campground, several hiking trails, but no real "bang for the buck" as other state parks offer. There is no lodge as other parks have and the Nature Center has very limited hours. If you enjoy camping this park is ideal but I would not recommed Harmonie State Park for a day trip.
this place is so awesome...love the pool and friends and family that came to visit us while we stayed there for four months.
Park was clean and well maintained. Paths were free of debris. Did not see any trash or broken facilities.
The park has nice cabins and an in ground pool for swimming. Close to historic New Harmonie. Well maintained. Not overly crowded.
I grew up camping in this park. The campground now has shade and still has nice shower houses. Things seemed to go downhill for awhile as a victim of budget cuts, but with the Friends of Harmonie group, things seem to be looking up. The Olympic size pool, diving boards and slide make the swimming area enjoyable for all ages. The shallow end is 2' with a 10 or 12' diving well. There's also a baby pool. It's always clean and enjoyable. If you hit the Indiana State Park pools often, I'd recommend a pool pass. Concessions available when the pool is open. The hiking trails are well kept, wide and normally very easily passable. There are miles of opportunities for day hikers. I think that they now also have mountain bike trails and horse trails, but no horseman's campground. If fishing is your thing, there are family fishing ponds that are good as well as a nice ramp to put your boat into the Wabash River. The nature center has limited hours, but check it out when you're there as the naturalist usually has activities for the kids. Family cabins are available for rent. You have to bring everything you need though (bed sheets, towels, etc.).Campground sites are roomy and grassy. 30 amp service at all sites. I'm not sure if they have 50 amp yet or not. They've allowed more "campground hosts" and volunteers to set up permanent sites with decks, etc. I think it looks a little trashy, but I suppose that's a trade off for the free labor. Pack a picnic or take a camping trip and you'll be guaranteed a wonderful time at HSP.
This state park is very nice and is located near an interesting little towm worth visiting New Harmony. The town has nice cafe that is very old and visited routinely by the locals. The town has historical sites that are worth seeing for sure.
The historical site of the Rappite Utopian society known as the "Harmonists" migrated from Pennsylvania to southwestern Indiana in the early 19thy century. Many of the original buildings remain and guided tours are provided. In addition to the State Park, the town of New Harmony is quaint and a delightful part of the experience.
This park has it all it is like paridise, we have been going as a family for the past 12 yrs
