I think our driver was named Johnasiah but I am not sure. He was very courteous and would answer our questions and about anything we wanted info on. The horse "Debbie" was a four year old and stopped at stop signs without being told to. She knew when to turn as well. This was well worth our time. My wife does not walk well for any length of time and this was worth the time and money spent.
We took a ride around town and the drivers had brought the wrong carriages at first. so we hopped aboard the Amish carriages and rode to the stable where they got the open carriages out for us. Our driver was very open and hospitable and willing to tell all about Shipshewanna as well as about himself and the Amish people.
We took the buggy ride out and really enjoyed the pace and the horse. The Amish driver wouldn't help my wife get in the buggy. He then proceeded to use the racial terms that shocked us. We hadn't brought that subject up but he did. He was not rude to us but the talk was shocking to us. We arrived at the home, it was very clean and the family was somewhat receptive. They served a decent meal. Chicken was boneless, it seemed to be pre packaged. The potatoes were instant. The noodles were excellent. Bread was very good. The pies were good but didn't seem to be made there. They called it family style , but it was more a conveyor belt style. They didn't leave the food on the table, because they were having some neighbors over later. It was a very disappointing evening.
You have to do this. Wasn't sure which one to do but we just "happened" on this one and purchased a tour through the country. It was definitely worth the money we spent. We ended up being the only couple on the buggy and the driver was excellent. We talked about the Amish culture and it was truly interesting. The owner who ran it was so nice as well. When we were waiting he explained a lot about their winter and their way of life which is so different from those of us who live in Texas. I am going back next year and will do dinner with the Amish.
Buggy line day tours and Kenny the owner was great. We had a buggy ride around town and then a backroads tour that includedstops along the way at the cheese and noodle factory. We stopped at the quilt and candle shops. It was informative, educational and entertaining.
We highly recommend using Miller's Buggy Line Tours for you buggy ride. We did the buggy ride and farm tour and then we also went on the buggy ride and the dinner in an Amish home. This was a nice way to spend the afternoon and early evening. The prices are a little steep but once we paid for it we didn't think about that again. Harley was our driver and he was great. If we go back again we will definitely be requesting to be in his buggy!
We highly recommend a Miller Buggy ride and dinner in an Amish home. We learned so much about the Amish, the culture and their beliefs on our Miller ride and dinner. The buggy ride was very good and we enjoyed chatting with the driver, who readily answered all our questions. The home we dined in was Loretta's who did a beautiful job of easily feeding 10 guests. The home was spotless and the meal was served in family style. The food is delicious of chicken, roast beef, homemade noodles with chicken, fresh corn, mashed potatoes, gravy, and a wonderful fresh garden salad. Homemade bread and spreads were delicious. The peanut butter spread is scrumptious! (The next day we bought several jars to share with family.) The two desserts of custard pie or black raspberry pie were so tasty. Loretta and her husband answered any questons we had and made us all feel so much in their home. Be sure to sign up or stop by to take the Miller Buggy Line Tour! Visitors will definitely enjoy this experience. One couple on our tour was visiting for the third time. In fact they picked this tour since it went to Loretta's. Good time, good food and friendship.
There are several buggy tours that offer an Amish style meal, but Miller's is the only one that offers an Amish meal IN an Amish home, served by Amish. The price may seem a little steep ($40/person) but it is well worth the experience. The buggy ride was nice, but not as long or informative as I had hoped. But still, very nice and enjoyable! The dinner is the main attraction! There is nothing like getting to see Amish life first-hand inside an Amish home while eating home-cooked Amish food. This is a great chance to really see what the Amish are like (and dispel many myths). There's no need to be nervous about being English here, just enjoy the hospitality and remember to try everything as it comes by!
I did the buggy ride and dinner with Amish family. The buggy ride was cool the dinner was fantastic. I had hoped the buggy ride would have narrative of the area.
There are a few options here from just a short trip around the town, to working on the farm, to dinner with the family. We opted for the ride and dinner with an Amish family. It is a great experience since everything is traditional. You get to appreciate what it is like to be in that horse and buggy as cars and trucks go zipping by. The dinner at the house is wonderful, not just the food, but watching the family gather, how it was prepared without electric, the art of conversation. I imagine the working on the farm gives the full aspect of the life as well and the hard work. In our fast world what a great way to slow down and appreciate.
Wow, what an experience. We did the 4 star tour which takes you to a working Amish farm where you can help with chores. This tour is only at 4:30 in the afternoon since it arrives during chore time. First let me advise you to buy tickets early. The lady at Hoestetler's store sold us tickets at 3pm for the 4pm tour and when we arrived were told she should not have sold tickets that late and we had to get out of the buggy and wait while all the people going for dinner rode the buggies and then the driver had to come back for us. So if you would like to do this, please buy tickets earlier in the day or the day before to avoid that. Our tour once we started was phenominal. The driver let the kids sit up front with him and they loved it! The buggies are actually quite warm and cozy inside. The family that lives on the farm were very kind and let the kids milk the cows and try the milk. There was a little girl that had the kids help her with feeding the baby calves by bottle. They were so taken with this way of life. The tour guide at the farm, Erving was so kind, and gentle. Truly a man of Christ. It showed in everything he said and did. Really we could not have asked for a better tour. The driver also let the kids feed the horse carrots when we returned. I know this was the highlight of our trip!
The tour guide was very informative and the van was comfrtable. the tour stopped at three Amish businessesand ended with dinner in an Amish home of a cousin of the tour guide (who owns the tour company). We had a wonderful experience
We were running out of time but the kids were dying to go for a buggy ride, so we opted for the quick little 8 min trip around shipsie. This was a fun little ride. The fellow that took us was very colorful and told us lots of stories. He pointed out landmarks and we ended up discovering a shop area and blacksmith that we hadn't previously known about or intended on visiting. I don't know if the 2 hour farm visit would have been too much for us, but this was just right.
Kenny and his helpers are wonderful. It was so amazing to eat dinner with an Amish family. They were so warm, friendly, generous and kind. It was an eye opener for my children to see how these wonderful people lived. We saw no television and limited modern conveniences. My children ages 11 and 14 saw a kitten being born, fed a baby calf, milked a cow and played with gorgeous puppies that are bred on the farm and had the opportunity to ride in a buggy. Coming from the Chicago suburbs, it was a great trip and an education.
