Wow what a fantastic art museum. Beautiful grounds, and plenty of great art. If you know what kind of art you like, go to those galleries first. If you just start on the ground floor, you might end up looking at a lot of "classical" art if it's not your thing. It follows a semi walk through style, but there are parts where the walk through is a little convoluded where it connects with the older structures. Lots of staff who are happy to give directions.
Great exhibit. I was glad it traveled to Indianapolis I enjoyed it so much that I joined the museum.
Not sure what I expected, but this was more than I could have imagined. This is a fabulous museum inside and out. Outside there is $5 parking which also included underground parking on those super cold days. There are 3 main floors of exhibits. They have a brochure called see the Museum in an Hour. We actually went there for two consecutive days so that we could see more. On the outside is the famous LOVE sculpture by Robert Indians (really!) and several other sculptures and grounds with the Lilly Mansion. Inside there are 3 main floors of exhibits one better than the other. Famous artists, Asian Art, African Art, Old Masters, New Masters, Modern and Contemporary Design and Art, Glass.....You name it, they have it. Free now, but come April there will be a charge. The Cafe inside was quite tasty. Ate there two times also. Catered food and more like a "restaurant" than an museum cafe. The tomato soup was wonderful as were the wraps and crab cakes. A must see if you are in the Indy area.
The IMA is a great place to visit for a variety of occasions and circumstances. The museum has an extensive and varied permanent collection of art, amazing featured exhibitions, and massive, well maintained public grounds that are quite a sufficient attraction themselves. As far as price, it is a suggested donation. If you are able to contribute, that's great; if not, you can still attend or contribute what you are comfortable with.As for the grounds, they were donated to the museum by the estate of Eli Lilly, including the house where he lived. Tours are offered of his home. The grounds are large and well-maintained, including statue gardens, open grassy spaces, etc. They are a great place to have a picnic, walk with a date, or play frisbee with your kids. They extend beyond the canal into a forested area and lake with multiple large outdoor installations (called 100 acres) and an educational nature center. There's also a greenhouse that you can tour or shop in. Really, they are a fabulous resource that this city offers that I should be taking better advantage of! The permanent collection has many galleries dedicated to American and European art. Their European art selection, particularly, is huge and of a very high quality, including many of the old masters, renaissance, realism, impressionism, and post impressionism works. They also have a great selection of African and Asian art, as well as Greek, Egyptian, etc. Moreover, they have a good sampling of modern art including some really cool installations (when you see the room with a giant rectangular shadow on the wall, walk closer and check it out!). Their featured exhibitions are interesting and often distinguished as well, including the now-closed Georgia O'Keefe, Ai wei wei, Andy Warhol, Matisse, and currently Monuments Men, Erwin Wurn (really cool, throughout the whole museum integrating the visitor with the art), and several others.Basically, the most important take away is that this museum values quality over quantity. Don't get me wrong, they have a great quantity. But every exhibit they have is of a very high caliber, and the museum in nonetheless navigable within one long day or two shorter ones. Whatever your interests in art might be, you will find something valuable to you here.
This museum is a great place to take the entire family something to view by all. It has many events that are fun and interesting. It is handicapped assess able and easy entrance from highway. Large variety of art and sculptures that are brought in for viewing at certain times of the month. Great place for education in the art field.
Enjoyed the special exhibit of the art of Georgia O'Keefe and other artists of the Desert South West. The museum is well layed out and has great potential for the future.
My husband and I spent Valentines Day exploring Indianapolis and chose the art museum for our main attraction. It was so cold that being inside was a great choice. They have a ton of really nice art throughout. I would take at least 4-5 hours to see and appreciate all of it. While you're there make sure to check out the cafeteria. Even if you don't eat anything in there, check out how they've decorated the lower seating area. It's so neat!
This museum offers the opportunity for a light romantic activity that peaks intellectual conversation.
THE IMA is a wonderful museumthat is free and is in a large space that shows the pictures to their best. They have a broad range of high quality art from some Egyptian work, El Greco (one of my favorites), and a range of Western painters from the middle ages to the Impressionists to nicely displayed contemporary art as well as African art and some Egyptian and Greek. Parking is $5 and the gift shop has an eclectic selection that is worth checking out.
I love this museum! It is free to visit, you only have to pay for the special expo of the moment. They always have some kind of event or some fun expo going on. Love the laid back atmosphere and the unusual light for a museum. Don't miss it if you are in Indianapolis!
I always love the Museum of Art, its free and they rotate their art frequently enough every-time i visit i see something new!
IMA is a wonderful place to soak in the culture. It is also a great place to have family photographs taken. The LOVE sign and grounds are so fascinating and stunning. There are so many exhibits to enjoy and many that include children.
Museum is great but but huge acreage with paths and grassy areas and a profusion of colors in spring, summer and fall, tall and gorgeous just welcome all to enjoy. Special outdoor venues occur regularly. My daughter and I had a wonderful Mother's Day picnic there several years ago. INDY's finest nature spot.
Love the fact that it's free, and even more that it's in the perfect location. Love art and the fact that they bring exhibits that one can see, for a price, but it's inexpensive. Lovely place for all ages.
This is a beautiful, well laid our museum. The audio tour definitely adds to the experience. Nice (but pricey) lunch spot. There are also many other great attractions on the grounds of the museum including the Ruth Lilly House and the 100 Acre Park.
