Music combo played & sang Carmichael & Mercer with skill. Audience participation in the mystery was great fun.Price was a good deal given the variety of desserts & drinks.Another sell-out.
T C Steele is arguably the finest and most widely recognized artist from the 19th Century Hoosier Salon. A plein air artist [from French "En plein air...an... expression which means 'in the open air' the act of painting outdoors, per Wikipedia], this is a total experience...an opportunity to see thelargest single collection of his work; his home; his studio; and the grounds. Look closely at the reviewers and you will note that most have penned only a select few reviews or a great many, suggesting the richness of an experience that would motivate such people to write. Yes, it is a bit out of the way but a rare total opportunity to not only take in excellent works but also get a real sense of the artist (and of his wife) and of his inspiration. Modest fee for tour.
A quiet place to see some real Hoosier art from the last century. It's a bit off the beaten path, but well worth the time you take to get there.
I have been here several times but my husband hadn't. We stopped by on Monday and the buildings were closed but the grounds were open. It was a lovely day and we walked around for a while and chatted with an employee. I love it when the plein air artists are there painting. It is great to see them and to paint with them. They do it in May and September. I love the house and the furnishing. The studio is full of his paintings which are awesome! They even have his table and paint brushes. It is not well advertized, but well worth a visit.
See this impressive place and hear stories about Indiana and one of her most beloved native sons, T. C. Steele. Find out about his even more remarkable wife. You'll see the early paintings of this genius, including one done before his teens. Learn how he followed his dream though all obstacles. When you see his landscape paintings, you'll understand why he's one of the most influential artists of his day. We especially enjoyed hearing about the wonder with which he and his wife were regarded by his farmer-neighbors. Don't miss this often humorous and always interesting part of Indiana history. And check out that view!
Beautiful grounds and house. Learned a lot about early settlement of artists. Made me appreciate the long history of Brown County's aesthetic appeal.
Docent led tour. John was not only knowledgable but enthusiastic to share the history of TC Steele. Felt we knew the history of the art, studio and house when we left. John brought the family to life. John described Steele's progression in his career and his influence on Indiana's art community. We highly recommend going to this site. the state has a treasure in this beautifully kept site.
My wife and I enjoyed our visit of the T.C. Steele State Historic Site. We (and especially my wife) both enjoy art but were not familiar with T.C. Steele's life or work. We are now and are both big fans. The park was nice too with many hiking trails and places to have a picnic with family and friends. We recommend going to the office and signing up for a tour of his studio and of the house. The tours are on the 15 min mark of every hour and are $7 for adults and a little less for children and seniors.
Take the 1 hour, $5 tour. Well worth it. Because of cold weather, we were the only 2 on the tour so we got to ask lots of questions and see much of this esteemed artist's work.
Since I Am An Artist I Especially Enjoyed Our (Mostly Level) 1-Hour Walking Tour of The Artist's Studio, Home, Gardens, & Grounds Conducted By A Knowlegeable Guide. A Nominal Fee Is Charged.
This site is like a giant time capsule that you can walk through. The studio and home are filled with the artist's work and are much like he and his wife left in in the early part of the twentieth century. The guides are very knowledgeable and the grounds very rustic and inviting. Well worth the $5 entry.
Home and studio of Indiana artist TC Steele and his wife. Set on top of a hill in Brown County, the grounds and scenery themselves are gorgeous. Great trail hiking - some of the trails of moderate difficulty. Home and art studio are accessible only with tour guide. Cost $5 which is definitely worth it..... seeing the art and hearing the stories and history behind the paintings.Only bad part of the tour was that the leader would wait for people to join us then repeat whathe had already told us ... this happened a few times. Would be better to stick with designated tour time and if people are late, they just join in where we are. Lovely gifts in small gift shop.
Beautiful grounds, with a garden that could use a little TLC.Trail of silences was a wonderful respite from the noise of a school group visiting. Dappled sunlight in a valley between ravines on a fall day, wonderful.Cabin is free and self guided, house and studio tour must be purchased. Worth the money to help a site like this sustain. Tour guide was very knowledgeable and happy to answer questions. Did not rush us through as is the case in many tours.Bring a picnic to really enjoy the site.
Setting is very beautiful wooded ridge. Gallery was quite significant. Tour of home was one of the best I've been through, as mostly original furnishings. Staff here was most friendly, knowledgeable, courteous, and extremely helpful. Gardens were a bit dry and gone by when we visited. Highly recommended. About 2 miles S of Indiana46 Belmont Indiana.
The tour guide was very knowledgeable about the site and information about Steele and his family. The grounds needs some work but worthwhile to visit.
