This is well worth the visit. I love that they have so many places to stop and sit to rest and look over the art. I would recommend visiting this to anyone who loves art. The paintings are just incredible. I hope to be able to visit again.
I grew up in DC and I have been coming to the Smithsonian for decades. I love them all and have seen them all so many times I could never count. In all, I think this is my favorite place Let me just say that I am not a HUGE art guy. By that, I mean I am not a guy who owns great art or wallow in the whole art scene. I am a normal guy who LOVES football, summers in shorts and flip flops, and a beer with good friends That said, I find the National Gallery of art to be a sanctuary in the wild. I love to spend an hour or two strolling through the quiet galleries appreciating the masters. I never get tired of the impressionists and their use of color and light. I see something new every time I go. There is also a cafe and coffee shop. The food is overpriced but the quality is good so I will grab a bit of something from time to time and enjoy it. I really enjoy the Garden Cafe where I can grab a cup of tea or coffee and just sit and enjoy the sound of the small nearby fountain In the end, I am usually only good for about an hour or two of art before I overload and need to go, but that short time feeds my art soul until the next visit This is a must see
Garden Cafe was lovely for lunch and the National Gallery is always a treat for art lovers. Plan to spend at least half a day here.
Budget plenty of time to spend here.... loved seeing many master artisans.... Renoir, degas, Monet, daVinci, Picasso... take a free audio tour so that you can spend time where you want...
The National Gallery is a national treasure with a huge collection on display in comfortable, often uncrowded rooms--well, except for special exhibits which can be shoulder to shoulder. I find it easier to navigate with much more of interest (to me at least) than its Boston and NYC counterparts, the MFA and the Met. Unlike every other top-notch art museum I've visited, it's free of charge, as are its very fine film series, each focused on a country, a director, or an artist. There are almost always special exhibitions, some of them reflected in special menus in the lovely Garden Café--e.g. top notch Spanish food in a lunch buffet with an special exhibit of Spanish art and armor a few years ago.
Entrance into the museum is free. The artwork is amazing! Many famous works and you are able to get very close. Beautiful gift shop.
There are so many wonderful moments to enjoy in this treasure chest of a museum--from Dali's Last Supper to the American art galleries. Be sure to stop at the upside down waterfall between the two buildings and find the East and West garden courts in the old building. If you only have time for one building, wander through the old building. This art gallery rivals the collections of Europe. You can break up your visit with lunch in the cafeteria under the waterfall.
This is one of my favorite places for lunch on the Mall. The cafeteria is located in the tunnel between the East and West wings of the National Gallery. What makes it so special is the "waterfall" behind the glass wall. The food choices are good and prices are comparable to other places on the Mall. I find it a relaxing break on a day at the Smithsonian.
I had some time to kill and decided to walk though the Gallery of Art's West Wing. It was a little hot and stuffy in there at the time. However, it was very peaceful and tranquil as you gazed among the different pieces of art. There were some artists there painting a painting OF a painting ;-P That was cool to see. Loved the fact that there are couches in each room. It gives you an option to sit and take in an art piece. The map was a little difficult to follow as there are rooms inside of rooms inside of rooms. Not a place for children.
