This art gallery is in another historic mansion in Atchison. The home itself is an amazing work of art. The craftsmanship shows in every tiny detail of the home. The art museum, located on the second floor, was just OK. I was disappointed that the rooms that housed the art had carpeted walls and flooring. Every floor in the home is decorative parquet wood flooring. There are supposedly 42 different wood patterns on the floor in the home. Covering those seems like a crime! If you go to Atchison, do not miss the opportunity to walk through this home!
Thanks to Tripadvisor reviews, we stopped by Muchnic Art Gallery for the house tour and art gallery. The lower level is still decorated from the last residents at this house in the 1920s. As stated in other reviews, the ornate wood work and wood floors are the highlight of this tour. The house also has stain glass windows. There is a docent who was very knowledgeable about the house, previous owners, & decor. The 2nd floor is the gallery which has rotating artist exhibit. I have to admit I did not care for the art displaying currently. Cost is $3, that wasn't advertised so I was surprised when the request came up. But $3 for a mini tour and art is a decent price compared to other historic house tours I have taken over the years.
The home is actually very beautiful. The carved woodwork along with leather used with the design was magnificent. The tour guide was very knowledgeable in her knowledge of the home and told me all about the family and how they had donated it to be seen and enjoyed by others. The furniture was very ornate and matched the time period for that era. What was interesting was that the fireplaces matched both front and back. The designs of the fireplaces was very unique and each had a different design. The upstairs I believed consisted of four or five rooms filled with different types of art by various artists. I didn't pay much attention since I'm not into art, but did notice the driftwood art was unique and different. The cost of the tour is a donation,
If you like seeing great craftsmanship, this is a must on your visit to Atchison. The embellished woodwork, parquet flooring, and stained glass are gorgeous examples of gilded age success stories. This house also functions as an art gallery so it's a bonus to view the showcased artist's work.
This was not an attraction we had planned to visit but it was WONDERFUL. It is in a beautiful mansion and the art is on the second story. All the art of the second floor is for sale, most of it ranged from $100 to $2000 per piece. The mansion is well restored and the woodwork is unbelievable!
I did not visit for the art itself. I visited for the story of the house and the tour. It is such a neat story and to know that the furnishings have been preserved just adds to it.
If you are in Atchison Kansas and are a woodworker, you must check this one out! The art was very intriguing, but the woodwork throughout the house was simply beautiful!!
