There is very little here to see. There is a hospital on the grounds. And a couple of old buildings. We were hoping to see more of this piece of history.
My wife and I enjoyed the afternoon at Fort Dodge. Very interesting history of the Fort and how it is still being used to house veterans. It seems like the state has found a very effective manner to save the Fort and help the vets.
My wife and I took 3 of our grand sons there one afternoon. They enjoyed having their picture taken on all the cannons and the anchor. we drove around and there were many veterans sitting on their porches. We waved and they waved back.
Well maintained and has an extended life for use as homes forveterans. What better way for an old fort to live out its life.
After visiting other western forts found this one to be rather bland. Used now for other purposes it seemed difficult to "see" what the fort used to be like. Very disappointed.
Worth a quick drive through to see all the old buildings and the veterans homes and learn the importance of the Sante Fe Trail.
We road the shuttle and drove through the fort. The driver pointed things out and told us interesting facts about the buildings. I dont think I woukd have enjoyed it ss much on our own.
This site served as a fort for only a several years and is now the Kansas Veterans Home. There are buildings from the time of the Sante Fe Trail and other later ones. The ones of interest are identified by signage. Veterans live in separate homes and in multiple resident facilities. Interesting to learn the Forts relationship to the Trail. The Veterans Cemetary across the highway is quite interesting as well.
Take a few minutes to drive through and see the fort. Really cute old buildings and neat history! Loved the history of the fort and seeing the buildings and exhibits.
Only one restored building. Interesting curator. Was expecting a little more considering its importance to the Santa Fe trail. Watch the parking lot if you have an RV!
We were on the trolly tour and did not get off to see any of the buildings, so hard to judge but interesting to see.
*War vets live here with their spouses, please be respectful to them and their property. And beware of the speed limit, most folks here travel by foot and golf carts. Don't be afraid to talk to any of the veterans, they are worth the time to listen to and they will be able to help you if you are looking for a certain building or person. There are some museums here with great history. Check out the Post Office, Store, Church, Gift Shop, etc. It's well worth the time travel. If you need assistance just ask. Go Discover It!
The Fort, signage, staff, and my favorite....the Cemetary. I'm beinf laid out there
Fantastic for history buffs. The cemetary is a very peaceful place for ex-servicemen. One of out friends interred ther.
Fort Dodge is small with only afew orginal buildings left and those had to be pointed out to us. We spent all of 15 minutes there.
