We stopped in for a while and looked around. We really liked the museum and the three original buildings they had next to it. I liked the guns they had on display
This museum is on the site of the famed "Boot Hill" grave yard in Dodge City. In addition to the grave sites there are numerous displays and historical artifacts including the recreation of the businesses lining front street in old Dodge City. Well worth a couple of hours for the visit.
This is one of the better old west museums I have visited. Definitely a great place to stop and see some old west history. Highly recommend!!!
We really didn't expect the entrance fee - though we probably should have. Nonetheless, the overall experience was positive. Since we went in the middle of winter, all the wonderful activities that normally go one were silent - but it was still nice to walk around the grounds and learn a little history at the same time.
Fun, make sure you see the shows. The fudge is great! The real history of Dodge City is interesting.
Love the fusion of a museum of plain indians as well as life in the west. Incredible to see so many artifiacts. The muesum itself its 80% of front street, as well as an old church, house, and school. there is a functioning saloon where you can order draft beer (wish they had whisky) and sasparilla. Sasparilla is essentially root beer, but way better.
There is a lot of history to learn about. The employees are very informative and you can tell they love their job and share their enthusiasm. During the summer from Labor day to Memorial day is the best time to go but they are open all year.
I had always heard of Dodge City Kansas as the place to visit ....Well I was quite surprised upon arriving in the place to find its really just a small little Prarie town with a railroad going through the middle like many in the area.Found the museum in the middle of main street, and was suprised to fine how interesting it was...full of original artifacts from back in the day.Loved all the old buildings , even if they were replicas. ...We did the usual souvenir shopping which is always fun.Worth a stop if you are in the area
Try to go when they are going to have a gun fight or other special activity. Lots to walk around and see and the gift shop is huge. We have gone a few times, our children love Boot Hill!
We were the only visitors on a cold Sunday afternoon. Staff was pleasant and helpful. The museum is a blast to walk through, especially if you are an Old West aficionado. They also have a Native American museum on site which we didn't have time to visit. The gift shop has lots of memorabilia to tempt you.
We spent the afternoon here during our visit to Dodge City. It is a fun and interesting place to visit. There is lots of old west cattle drive and wild west history here. A fun place for old ages. It was worth the time we spent there.
It was interesting to wander through the old town recreation. However, we had been lead to believe that the whole area was a recreated "downtown" with open shops and attractions and what not and we're disappointed to learn it's just a tourist attraction (but I guess that's our own fault). The staff are quite helpful and nice, if there are not too many people around, stop for a chat with the guy who works at the saloon - he's extremely knowledgable about the history of the area.
We went on a road trip to see family during our Christmas vacation. We drove from Colorado to Mississippi, then through Texas back up to Colorado. My husband wanted to go back to Dodge City since it had been about 30 years since he'd last visited. There was a snow storm blowing through and it was 4 degrees, so it was pretty cold and there were just a hand-full of other visitors. It was nice having the place to ourselves! What a cool place to visit! We loved the museum and all the cool things you get to see from the past. Next time we visit, it'll be a lot warmer and we'll really get to enjoy ourselves outside.
This would probably be much better in the spring or summer. We went in the winter - they were open but only minimally - great things to see and do. We only had an hour and half - got through it out but would have liked to spend more time. Native American portion was very interesting (along with the buffalo).
This place is so very well done. From characters, to authentic decor, actual museum artifacts, and great customer service. Nicely done Boot Hill!
