We toured the gardens on the 8th. To tour the Allerton Garden you must do the tour. It is well worth it. Our guide, Star, was amazing. The gardens themselves are fascinating, and Star did a great job of explaining the history/ details about it. Not to be missed.
We had no idea what to expect at the gardens. Friends had visited it and recommended that we go. Although it was pricey, we felt it was well worth it. The beauty was exceptional, and the history of the area was fascinating. The tour moved along at a reasonable pace, and we didn't find it too long, although small children might. The guide was excellent. We were very glad we went!
Allerton gardens were a lovely mix of native and non-native plants with beautiful vistas. If your interest is in garden movie trivia then our guide Dave is your man however if your interest is in botanical information and landscape design you may be disappointed. The tour took longer than needed because of the seemingly endless anecdotes about movies filmed locally and film stars. Our guide did not seem particularly knowledgeable about horticultural questions. Not worth the admission price of $40 each.
First, i would like to advise to-be-visitors to understand what they are going to see, as i have heard disappointed opinions as"what kind of botanical garden it is?" Allerton gardens are not the usual botanical gardens we usually visit- with lavish tropical trees, variety of colorful flowers, and exotic fruit trees. I do get impression that lots of visitors come here to see Giant Morton Figs, featured in Jurassic Park movie, and ..... Id like you to visit this site and get acquainted with it a little bit. Dont read all about it- the guide will tell you a lot, just get the idea of it. You can also order your tour on that page. www.ntbg.org/gardens/allerton.phpAllerton gardens extends along the banks of the Lawa`i Stream where the valley narrows before opening onto Pacific Ocean, on the south shore of Kauai."Its a masterpiece of tropical romantism with magical bamboo forest, rock faces and maidenhair ferns, a phenomena; vines with brilliant scarlet flowers. It is a well-ordered paradise where nothing appears artificial, yet nature is so under control that not a leaf is out of place...The sound of water is in abundance in pools, minature waterfalls and fountains." We spent a nice morning here and our guide told as a lot about history of it, about how its taken care of now, and answered all possible questions. We enjoyed all rooms of the garden !
