This is a spectacular garden. There are so many interesting, unusual, and beautiful plants to see. Well worth the price of admission. It is a bit of a steep walk down (and back up), but easily done if you take your time (a golf cart tour is also available for those needing a bit of assistance). This is a must do in the Hilo area.
North of Hilo, the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden is an amazing feast for the eye. The walk is somewhat challenging - but well worth the effort. You may request a ride back to the top should you need assistance. Looking for a unique gift? Send a bouquet created from the flowers in the garden. The variety of flowers and other plant life is breathtaking -- take your camera!
Not only is the drive scenic, but you come up to the visitor parking then pay and soon you start your decent down this steep path into the woods. The couple who restored this land are by far the nicest people and deserve praise for this. They have before pictures of what the land looked liked and they transformed it into this beautiful garden with trees and flowers and plants everywhere. Everything is marked too which is nice and helps you learn the types of plants. Definitely a steep hike and to see everything in the gardens (A MUST DO) it will take a good 2 to 3 hours. There is also this one path you can go on that goes down to the stream that goes into the ocean...GO FIND IT! You and your kids will love it. I could have spent all day exploring.
I am a floral designer so flowers are my passion but even our friends who said they would not have made this a choice to visit, loved the experience. We did not go prepared with bug spay but one can buy it when buying your ticket. Do not let the rather steep walk down the initial decline deter your visit. If you have ambulatory concerns you can hitch a ride down on a golf cart. The garden has a natural tropical jungle feel although I am sure great planning has gone into creating this atmosphere. Many wonderful species of tropical flowers. I particularly loved seeing all the varieties of ginger, antherium, orchids and heliconia. A comfortable walk takes you along a stream, pond, waterfalls and a lovely bay. We were able to talk with a garden employee who gave us history and other great info. This visit fed my soul. Do not miss a stop here.
At the end of our Big Island trip, after being in awe at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, we stopped here to spend the morning before our flight to Oahu. I believe it was the highlight of our experience on the island. The setting of the garden is magnificent. The quality and maintenance of the plantings is excellent. This is what paradise should look like.
