(Goen Gao)
The Waimanalo area is one of the true beauty of Oahu. From the beautiful beaches, local eats and breath taking views. The Makapu'u Lighthouse Trail is a very easy paved walk so if you don't feel like taking one of the many hikes that Oahu has to offer and would like to see beautiful views then this your spot to go to. PROS: Location: The Makapu'u Lighthouse Trail is also known as the Kaiwi Scenic Shoreline is located on the east side of the island (the windward part). My husband and I stay in Honolulu for the convience of food, shopping and other tourist attractions. The drive here from Honolulu was about 30 minutes. It is a beautiful scenic drive to this side of the Island. We had to stop a couple of times to capture the natural scenery that this area has to offer. Trail: The trail is about 2 miles altogether (30 minutes each way). It is a very easy and busy trail. Very kid and family oriented. I walked up this trail in flip flops! It slowly inclines up so for those that do not like the steepness of hikes, this is perfect for you. The Scenery along the trail is BEAUTIFUL with impressive views overlooking Makapu'u Beach, Koko Head and the windward coast. Whale watching: We came in mid January-whale season! During our decent to the top, we had to stop a couple of times to watch the many whales emerging from the ocean. I recommend carrying binoculars if you plan on whale watching. CONS: Weather: Not a lot shade available to hide from the hot sun. I recommend coming earlier in the morning if you want to beat the heat. We came here around noon and it was extremely hot. Parking: Although there are parking available, this is one of the most popular trails in Oahu. Depending on the time and day, parking spots can be very limited. Tips: No restroom facilities around!
We had half a day to kill time before we headed to the airport and thought it would be a good 2 mile (round trip) hike - enough to get the heartrate up but not so much that we would be smelly/sweaty on the plane and we were right. But really, the views were in incredible. The day was slightly overcast - perfect conditions since there's little shade. We were lucky enough to be in whale migration season (jan-march) and it was fun scanning the waters for whale spouts and breaches; we encountered dozens of them. This island point of the island gave you such spectacular views both to the south and the east. It's a definite recommend!
I like that it's great for families, toddlers, strollers, and dogs. It the drier side of Hawaii but the winds make up for it. You see the ocean practically the whole time you walk up and the view of Rabbit island is spectacular. The view of the lighthouse from the paved road is minimal so if you want more of a view, you would have to trek on the dirt. Best of all, with all the good food you eat on the island, this is a great way to walk it off.
I hear the views are good, but we went on a rainy afternoon so I can't speak to that. It's a pleasant stroll up the trail and the lighthouse is interesting. Pop down to the tidepools if you can. It can look like quite a chore from the top, but it's really not too bad.
This was one of the easiest hikes we went on but still enjoyable. Lots of families, dogs, etc on the way up so it is accessible for most! There is construction going on and the trail is closed for parts of the next 6 months so make sure you check before you head there!
You will not be disappointed in this hike! Spectacular views of the pacific ocean and the Makapuu lighthouse and lovely foliage along the way. Make sure you bring a hat, wear sunscreen and at least a liter of water and maybe even a little snack. Take your time, take in the views and bring a camera! You'll want to remember this one! Check out the tide pools down below, too!
Ok so you aren't a triathete? No problem, small kids in sandals trudged up this hill, overlooking ocean. Much better than Diamondhead as its wide and paved. Bring water or you will be parched. Can see whales on many days. We do this trip every time in Oahu.
Busy......but great views! Worth the small trek. Easy with kids and a good bit of exercise after beach sitting! :-)
Makapuu lighthouse trail is a wonderfully serene hike - not too difficult - but away from the busy Waikiki beaches. Great views and a nice way to spend the morning - about 2 hours required to enjoy the scenery and do the hike
Make sure to go and whale watch from the points. If you do tide pools be respectful! Its a place of beauty and anything that you bring should go back with you, otherwise its a place of waste! Make sure to go early bring water sunblock and enjoy the views. No rush in Hawaii, no can can!
Enjoyed the scenery and the beauty. Wear good shoes and your sunscreen and bring water. The views are beautiful. It's a good idea to bring binoculars to possibly see whales in the distance.
It was at noon when we took to this trail with magnificent view all the way to the destination. Please never underestimate the SUN BURN and HEAT but, everything was worthwhile and if you have binocular, pls bring as quite possibly you'll see the humpback whales dancing, playing afar. And when reaching the very end of the trail, standing on the view platform or even down to the lighthouse, which is the very eastend of the Oahu Island, you'll have the Waimanalo Bay in the northwest and Hanauma Bay in the southwest. One word - gorgeous!
We weren't able to do the hike, but kinda able to see what view was available. They were doing construction on the trails to the lighthouse. Sadly it wasn't updated on their website that this was happening, so it was a bit of a waste of time on our end driving out there. Otherwise it would've been a great way to end the morning after a snorkel in Hanauma Bay
Great hike - with nice views of Makapuu bay below...a must see when a tropical storm brings massive waves that have first-break at the lighthouse and/or Bird, Rabbit Island. Bring your sunscreen as there is no cover and plenty of sun ;-)
