I WANT TO LIVE HERE was the first thing I thought when i got off the bus. The guides were so knowledgeable and I felt like I got to know a bit more about Doris and her motivations. I wish we could have taken photos inside because my descriptions do not do it justice.
Finally, after ordering the museum book year ago and enjoying that and seeing the NYC small traveling exhibit, I finally made it to the real thing! To arrive at the home and make the dramatic entrance into this fabulous space and see the flow of the rooms and the exquistite treasures and decor was the highlight of the Oahu part of the trip. Doris Duke has preserved beautiful Islamic art for us to see and incorporated it in such a way that it feels like her home and not a museum. In preservation of this most rooms are a bit dark but just imagine how it was for Ms. Duke with everything open and airy; the Hawaiian sun, light and breezes enhancing the beauty her home.
SHangri La the home of Doris Duke, is one of the unique sites in Honolulu and well worth making a reservation through the Honolulu Museum of Art for a visit. For those who cannot pre-arrange a visit, the Museum is have an exhibition on Shangri La for the next few months with many additional events, so it is worth checking out the Honolulu Museum of Art as well
We had a week in Honolulu and didn't want to spend much time doing 'touristy' stuff. However, this was on our agenda as a must, and we were both really pleased that we had done it. Shangri La is a stunning place, housing the most amazingly beautiful collection of Islamic art. The tour (which takes about 2 hours) was informative and very interesting - our docent had a terrific understanding of the house, it's history and the importance of the collection it contains. It's a very well organised tour - you join it at the Honolulu Academy of Arts and are escorted out to the house and back in a small group via minivan. The art museum itself has a small but beautifully curated collection, so is worth visiting in its own right. I would recommend getting there well before the tour leaves to allow yourself time for a relaxing wander around. All in all, this was a highlight of our trip to Hawaii, and anyone with an interest in art, design or architecture should enjoy it.
You need to plan for this in advance if you want to see this fabulous house and location with a very nice Islamic art collection. Tour groups are small and you start at the Honolulu Museum of Art and take a shuttle to the property for a 90 minute tour. Beautiful setting and guides are knowledgeable.
The wealthy heiress Doris Duke built this beautiful mansion on the ocean on the other side of Diamondhead. She filled it with the most exquisite Islamic Art. This is a must-see while in Honolulu. Tours leave from and return to the Honolulu Museum of Art, so this is really a twofer: the museum, while small, is very well done and has a lot of Pacific and Asian Art not often seen elsewhere.
