Well appointed with water all around. The log pavillion was nice above the swimming area. It's just a serene and beautiful area to explore. There are different options for campsites and the Old Abe trail is connected and is a great trail. We returned in late Fall after peak and that is a nice scene to take in when the view is more wide open. Dylan's Dairy in town is also a great stop and if you need bike tires/innertubes there's a great little hardware store down from Dylan's too.
We stayed here for 3 nights and have to say I liked almost everything about this place. The campsites are spacious and well located. The sites have trees to provide shade but it is not thick or at least in the section with electric. I should mention that the electric sites are where we stayed but the non electric section comes within feet of the river. I did find it strange that you do not have to prove that you have a state sticker but the park ranger does drive around the park several times during the day. Just enough to remind you of his presence but not enough to feel like you are constantly being watched. There is a one way loop that goes around the park and there is also a walking/biking trail that also goes around the park. It also has some group areas, fishing docks, and some hiking trails. The one thing that was kind of a let down was the beach. Not really a sand beach as the entire beach area was heavy with rocks including the swimming area. Unless you have water shoes it is hard to use the beach or the swimming area. I am sure this is because of the current or to keep the weeds from filling the area. Still it does make it harder for young children to enjoy the area. Overall it was a great stay and a place I would come back to.
We camped at Brunet Island State Park and loved it. The camp sites are spacious and grassy. The waters are great for kayaking, and the Old Abe state trail was great for biking. The campground is a hidden treasure and a must do if you like to camp. We will be back!
beautiful Island many dear and small animals big trees and pretty colors a nice addition to our drive, this State Park is well kept please enjoy when in the area
Although we didn't camp at this location we took a drive through and stopped to check out the beach area. The sand had been raked and there were buoys marking the swimming area. There are many picnic tables and shelter areas. The campground is large and the park contains many trails to hike and bike. As we were driving into the park we saw a young deer eating near a brush pile. On the way out of the park we spotted another deer. When we visited in June 2013 the deer flies and the mosquitos were pretty bad, so I suggest bringing lots of repellent and a hat for hiking. A nice park with a large beach with access for canoes and boating.
