I went to Sunburst with a group from Cannonball Productions from Chicago on Jan 31st. The whole trip was really good fun.I have skied before but I felt I needed a refresher so I signed up for the Zone lessons along with several of my friends. I found that I progressed through all 4 zones easily inside an hour and got out on the slopes myself after that - exactly as they said I would! The equipment was comfortable and there seemed to be plenty of instructors and ski people around on the slopes. The 'Zone lessons' are a very good idea and EXTREMELY affordable ($10!). One of my friends ended up with a virtually private lessons because there weren't too many other people needing lessons and it was her first time on skis.I had never been Tubing before and I thought that was great fun! I enjoyed the moving carpet lift thing.I thought the runs on the hill could have been labelled better - I didn't see a big area map anywhere around, and after I had gone down a couple of the runs I just stuck to those ones because I didn't want to find myself on a black diamond run by mistake! The only other slight negative was that choosing the ski/snowboard boots was a self-directed activity which was very confusing and not very reassuring for the couple of newbies in our group. I think a few more helpers in the boot-fitting area would have contributed to a more positive first impression. A change machine for the lockers would be a helpful addition too!All in all I liked Sunburst very much and thought it was a good spot for the beginner or intermediate skier/boarder.
FYI. Sunburst is not affiliated with the national ski patrol. I was told they only have basic first aid training. Way below the standards of the National Ski Patrol.
My child was injured while snowboarding. While I thought it was a random accident, I later found out that another 7 kids had broke bones the same week my son was at the facility.I called the management with the intent to let them know about my son's injury because a report was never filed. The report wasn't filed because the ski patrol was focused on the other injured child who was crying. The ski patrol actually asked my son to carry the other injured child's skis down, while carrying his snowboard, all with what was later discovered to be a broken collarbone. The owner of the company Rob Friedo, was unconcerned, aggressive in his tone, and the was only concerned about defending the facility. I truly was calling just to alert them that another child was injured and maybe there was something not right on the hill. Our conversation ended with me saying we will not return to their property and him saying fine and hanging up on me. What a shame.
This was our 2nd visit to the tubing area of Sunburst, and we had another fun fun fun time!!! The staff in front is friendly and organized, and there was no wait time. There is a moving track to move us up the mountain, and then about 8 to 12 runs to choose from varying in speed but all equally fun! The only downside is that last year the boys on top and at the bottom were more helpful with your tubes where they would help you get out, push you down, etc. This time, none of this occurred. =( However, we had plenty of room on top to stand and wait for your chosen track, there were more boys on top to let us know when to go down, and they did inform us of the fastest and slowest runs. Unfortunately, there were a few accidents that day at the bottom where people weren't looking and got awfully hurt. There was not enough staff at the bottom to move the tubers along, perhaps they should all be equipped with walkie talkies to be in touch with the top of the hill boys before they let the tubers to go down. Bottom line, this a great mountain for tubing, no wait usually and good prices. Just keep your eyes OPEN and use good judgement.
Last week my husband and I returned to Sunburst. We have spent many years skiing at Sunburst. Since the hill was sold last year sometime the charming ski hill has been horribly run and neglected. When we pulled up last Saturday, it was after a Friday night of big fresh snow. We had our powder skiis hoping to experience the fresh snow. We were quite shocked to pull up and find no one skiing the hill. In fact the only life out there was a snow boarding competition. We purchased our 2 $40 each lift tickets. We took two horrible runs and decided to LEAVE!!! it was pure ice No excuse!!! groom the hill once in a while!!! Big ice off the chair lift at the top as well. So incredibly disappointing I don't think we will ever return.
We went tubing the Monday after Christmas with another family. The kids were aged 9-15. Everyone had a great time. It was not busy when we went just before lunch. There was no snow in southern Wisconsin which may have kept customers away. The ski and tubing runs had snow. The first set of tubing runs was open and they were actively making snow for the other runs. The runs were average speed this time and they allowed up to 5 riders to run at the same time. Employees at the end of the runs were doing a decent job watching out for collisions.
To be more than kind, my most recent experience under the new ownership, was disappointing. I've been skiing at Sunburst since it was little more than a tow rope and a T-bar. I've never seen conditions so awful. Furthermore, what the area is calling a Ski Patrol does not instill confidence. So sad to see what was such a nice place to ski and socialize become such a wasteland.
Took 8 nieces and nephews with sister skiing for Christmas present. All loved it! No, skiing is ever inexpensive, but great fun, no lift lines to speak of, and all could go any direction they wanted without getting lost on this small hill still big enough to learn on. Staff very helpful and friendly. Went back 2 days later for a memorable trip to the same hill for tubing (tubing area is immediately adjacent to the ski area), which is a relatively massive complex of lanes and thoroughly enjoyable!
We took our girls here as a surprise. One was an experienced snowboarder and one had never touched a board. The experienced one enjoyed the speed she got in the hills, but said it wasn't really challenging. The newby did the zone lesson, which turned out to be almost a private lesson because there weren't many people in the way while we were there. The instructors were great! There was a cool fire pit that had a great view of the slopes. The old farts stayed inside and worked on our laptops while the girls enjoyed snow time. There is free wifi, a bar, some food (try the cheese curds). We would certainly come back!
First time here - with my husband and daughters ( 11 and 13). We all had a blast tubing! Staff was friendly enough. We met the owners, who could not have been nicer. We live outside of Chicago, but travel frequently to Wisconsin and plan to come back to try the skiing.
This place is full of rude and unhelpful people. Since the new ownership everything has gone in the gutter ( to say it nicely). The ski patrol are the worst and honestly are an embarrassment to the national ski patrol. You have one option with them...either take an ambulance to a hospital or they do nothing for you. I witnessed a young girl get injured and no ski patrol were around to help. I have been skiing Sunburst since I was 3 and used to enjoy this place. The new owners will do anything to save a quick buck.
We have enjoyed our experience tubing many times in the past but this trip was different. We decided to go tubing late in the season. When we arrived the conditions were very icy on the tube chutes. When speeds are too fast the staff places rubber mats at the end of the run. On our first run I hit the mats and the tube came to a complete stop. I meanwhile was thrown head over heals smacking the back of my head on the icy tube run. I laid there for a minute and one of the staff came to adjust the mat. He may have mumbled are you ok but that was the end of his interest in my safety The kids seemed to do just fine due to their weight. The second run was fine although I still came to an abrupt stop and was dragging my boots the entire run to slow me down. The third run my daughter kept going to the very end of the run and stopped at the very top right before the run ended and a 20 foot drop down the embankment into the parking lot. My wife then came up from behind and hit her sending the tube down the embankment into the parking lot. Luckily my daughter was off of the tube at that point. The staff running the tube just sort of watched. One was lazily sitting in a tube where the tubes are stored. My daughter started walking around to go get her tube from the parking lot while the employees just stood around watching. Finally one of them offered to get the tube for her - really! Someone radioed down to them from a control booth and replied back not to worry about it that everything was fine. It was not fine as we were soon to find out.I sat-out our our fourth run.On the fifth run I still stopped abruptly but was ok. My wife though hit the mats and was thrown face first onto the icy run. She sat there with face bleeding. Staff came over to check on her but didn't seem to know what to do. No one called the ski patrol or offered to help her. We walked into the concession stand where finally the person running the stand offered to call the ski patrol. I find it incredible that no one called them immediately upon seeing blood on her face, nose, cheek. No one from the tube run came into the concession stand the entire 20 minutes were in there to check on us.Ski patrol checked on her and filed a report. She was ok but had bruising and scrapes on her face that lasted for a week or so. A manager was called and offered us a refund and an apology and mentioned that we probably weren't riding the tubes properly. What?!? Our center of gravity was too far forward? What?! As we were leaving they had moved the mats farther back on the run.I am very wary of managements ability to properly assess the safety conditions on the tubing runs. In my opinion the runs should not have been open under those conditions. If it is even possible for someone to reach of the tube run it is unsafe. Were they trying to squeeze a few more dollars out of the seaons? I would be careful when the runs are very icy and speeds are too fast. And also remember that waiver that you sign before tubing pretty much absolves them of any responsibility for your injuries and your ability to sue them.I would have no problem going tubing there again under the proper conditions. I hope no one gets hurt on those tubing runs.
My kids both 10 went to Sunburst on a school trip this last Friday. My daughter had never skied and decided to try it so signed up with lessons. The instructors were great. They stayed with her the entire 3 hours we were there. I would check on her regularly and the instructors could always be seen working with students - not only my child but others as well as adults. They may not be the biggest hills etc, I am not familiar with skiing, but I can say she didn't want to leave. She loved it. I stayed in the lodge, wish they had better food than cafeteria style, the kids like it. Upstairs bar area small but warm with or without the DRINKS!!! We will definitely be going back on our own and we all plan on taking lessons....
Over the weekend I took my son and 7 of his friends to Sunburst for his birthday party. The party package was to include 8 3-hour tubing tickets, a "reserved table" to accommodate all with 2 pizzas and 8 drinks. Upon arrival we were greeted to our "reserved table" big enough for 4 people directly in front of the door. When asking mulitple employees if we could get additional tables/seating for the party we were given attitude, with very little resolution. After going back and forth with the employees we asked to speak with the manager. They arrived 15-20 mins later and listened to our concerns. After which, offering a "complimentary" round of hot chocolate for the boys. If you are looking for a birthday party scene, this is not the place to do it. The boys had fun tubing and it was fun for them but the next time we will think twice about having a party there. The buildings are too small to accomodate parties and there is too much "traffic" coming in and out to have a large group in. Would recommend this place for just what it is for (skiing/tubing) but would not recommend for those wanting parties with private space.
I am in West Bend, WI for 1 week. The closest place to go skiing and go tubing in this vicinity is Little Switzerland and Sunburst. I went tubing there last Saturday, and it was great. It was not at all crowded, and the the snow was like powder on the slopes. Will definitely go there again!
