We visited the Oneida Nation Museum while we were on vacation with friends. This small, but incredibly informative, museum thoroughly traces the history and culture of the Oneida nation (one of the 5 Iriquois tribes.) Exhibits include artwork depicting the Oneida creation story, the interior of a longhouse, examples of early wampum belts, and several examples of arts and crafts. There is a special exhibit of the restored "Corn Husk Man" which is definitely not to be missed. We also enjoyed the transportation exhibit. There is a small, well-stocked, gift shop as well. The museum staff was especially knowledgeable and our tour was comprehensive and interesting. It's a bit off the beaten path, but well worth the drive. Highly recommended!
Recently attended the annual July 4th POW WOW with friends. It's always fun to watch the native American dance competitions, see the garments up close and personnel, and sample some of the cuisine. This year, we ate American Indian Tacos; they were great. It was basically the same as a Mexian Taco - but on special bread (which tasted like fried dough balls) instead of in a taco shell. We also purchased some crafts and silver jewelry. The POW-WOW is held on the grounds of a Museum, which was also showcasing true America Indian artwork. This is a cultural event, which is a great experience for children.
