I have heard about Camp 10 for years but never really skied there until this year. It is not a huge hill but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in atmosphere. This is a laid-back hill where people go to teach their kids to ski or just have a fun day on the slopes. Everyone is friendly and tries their best to make sure you have a great day. It is run on a budget and does not have the glitz of bigger hills. Instead, it is a place where parents can feel comfortable letting their kids wander while they bask in the sun in the lodge. There is enough diversity to keep things interesting with a mix of powder runs, groomed hills, some terrain for snowboarders or adventurous skiers, and a number of trails. It is conveniently located in Rhinelander's backyard and much cheaper than Granite Peak. They also have a great deal on season passes. Could it use some sprucing up? Yes, but I know we will be season pass holders for as long as they will have us.
I started skiing here in the 1970s. We live about 25 miles from camp 10. This hill is run on a very tight budget, but somehow still seems to get it right. My son and I went last Sunday and the snow was perfect. There was powder on some runs and nice groomed trails too. Three of the four lifts were running with no lines to slow you down. It may not be the biggest hill in the northwoods but it's still my favorite place to ski.
Well inputs from customers are always appreciated. Unfortunatly this review needs some technical clarifications....grooming is not done with a tractor and a barrel.....though thats a pretty creative idea it really isn't how its done. We use an LMC Packmaster 2100 with a three gang Valley Engineering Powder Maker renovator. A rain and thaw just before Christmas week made conditions less than optimal at every Wisconsin ski area and most in the UP. Most areas have had great difficulty getting all runs open......this is a very unusual winter and all area operators are doing the best they can under some very trying conditions. The day of this particular visit conditions were clearly rated as Fair........fair generaly means its skiable, you can have fun with it, but it is not optimal or "Good".
The skiing was nice, but the lodge was tacky and the area around the lodge was junky. The place could use some sprucing up and some cleaning up.
Wow-as hard as we try you just cant please everyone. This complaint relates to our first open day following the heaviest single snowfall (24 inches) that we had received in the history of the ski area. Grooming had actually started two days earlier not that morning as stated. Seven runs were open, not three as stated, but four of those runs were in powder condition and our powder hounds loved it! Our lift operators, ticket sales, kitchen employees etc typically show up about a half hour before opening. On the day in question our crew was running a little later because of poor road conditions (remember the 24 inch snowfall) but they were still there by 9:20 for 9:30 opening. The grooming that was still going on when the guest arrived an hour before we opened was typical of what many areas encountered that week after the exceptional snowfall- last minute touch ups to try to further improve the customers experience. That day was not a very busy one as customers were still having difficulty in digging out of their drives and navigating some city streets that still were not opened up. As President/GM I personally talked to every guest that day and never hear any complaint that even remotely approached the over the top complaint registered with trip advisor. We wish we could have won the individual over as a customer but obviously we did not. We do feel that the critisism was over the top and completly different from the experiences of our many many satisfied guests.
I came back to Camp Ten after growing up on its slopes in the 1960's and after 45 years of skiing all over the west I fell back in love with the northern wisconsin scenery and great family atmosphere at Camp Ten. Thanks for keeping the dream alive ! Go Ski J Dekker
This has to be one of the best ski hill experiences that I have had. We went last weekend, it was a great sunny day and the hill was perfect. Not too many people know about this hill. I used to be an avid skier in Lake Geneva, and have lived 15 miles from this hill for 12 years and never heard about it. The whole atmosphere of the place was great. I will def be a season pass holder as long as I live in this area. Great place and 1/2 the price of any other hills around!! Spread the word everyone you will not be sorry. Word of mouth works best, and its almost always right.
