Unable to get very close to the lighthouse as the pier is in need of repair. Able to see the lighthouse from the beach and the road that leads to the pier. Also can see great lakes freighters enter the Superior harbor from this location.
Its a fourteen mile drive to arrive at Wisconsin Point. The road is under construction so it was a little hard.
It was cold and very foggy the day we were here and a little errie. Could barely see the lighthouse, but you could hear the fog horn, so we got a glimpse of what a boat captian might be seeing and hearing traveling on Lake Superior. Tried to maneuver over the rocks to get to the lighthouse but after slipping once decided against it. Got some cool pictures and wife sort of got to see Lake Superior.
Not well marked once you get off the main road and not much to see once you get there. Very inferior to the Minnesota side.
This is not a tourist attraction. The city has all but forgotten about this place. It is abandoned. The LONG road in is awful. There are very large pot holes all the way down. Down here you will find locals swimming and kids partying. it is also well known in Superior that cars get broken into a lot. Like another reviewer said, if you go here do not have anything of value in your car. Youcan see ships come in but if you want to do that, go over to Canal Park in Duluth where it is cared for and safe.
I was there doing some winter birding. It's a great area for birding any time of year, and esp. good for anyone wanting to see bald eagles!
good place to come and see the worlds largest fresh water lakethe one bad thing is that lake Superior water is allways coldi have come here many times in 2010 with friends from church and we have never had a problem with being robbed,or trash being all over not sure what all the reviews about that are about, it always has been clean and nice sand to make sand castles in the road is a bit narrow But the cost to go to wi point is free, the lighthouse is cool it is a bit of a walk across large rocks not suggest going out the the lighthouse with small kids.nice view, would for sure come back. the light house did have a lot of bird droppings on it when we came,
The drive in is a nice road in the fall with all the colors. But on the way in you pass some trash cans that belong to the state/town and that looks just aweful. There really isn't a sign on the highway telling the Lighthouse is even down there, just a small sign saying something that wouldn't let visitors know it was down there. People party down there it looks like so that can be a mess. Other wise it can be something nice to see in this small town/area. This is where I got proposed to.
Wisconsin Point is quite & peaceful compared to Minnesota Point, which is residential. The birding is excellent. When you get to the end, you are right at the entry where ships come into the harbor (the Superior Entry).
I have to admit, usually I read reviews on trip advisor before i go to places but since we were in the area, we decided to check out Wisconsin Point Lighthouse. We drove down the road and decided to get out to take a few pictures of the Lake. We locked our car and no valuables were in plain sight. Upon arriving back at our vehicle 10 minutes later, we found the trunk lid ajar and the drivers window smashed. All of our belongings inside the vehicle were gone. Yes, they took our luggage and all. The police stated that this "happens all the time" out here. I agree with the reviewer a few months prior to my review, if you go, take everything out of your car and leave it unlocked to save yourself a headache from dealing with insurance due to vandalism.
Always a good time had when searching the shore line for those beautiful rocks! Water of course is chilly, but there is always some crazy locals swimming in that water like it is a coastal beach. But it is always a cool spot on a hot summer day. The drive is a bit rough. It takes alot of attention to go around that rough road, but it is beautiful when you reach your destination.
We drove the 10 mile road past all the "lots" where people could pull off and enjoy the beach. The road was rougher than rough. At times, all you could do was roll the vehicle slowly over the "pavement." The view at the end was very good, but I wouldn't take that drive again for anything.
We visited this last weekend. My daughter and I had fun collecting a variety of pieces of sea glass. We also spent some time just walking in the shallow water. There were quite a few other people on the beaches enjoying the nice weather. We did keep an eye out for anyone bothering vehicles as there are many signs warning not to leave any valuables in your car; we had no problems. We even spotted a beautiful little red fox while we were walking in the water!
The Wisconsin Point Lighthouse always makes for a great photo against the background of Lake Superior. There are great beaches to relax at, (no lifeguards) but great to go for a shallow swim or dip your toes into! If you are brave, you can hike across the breakwater out to the lighthouse, it's a path of giant rocks, but very doable. Be sure to bring your camera, you never know when a ship will be entering or leaving the Superior Harbor.
The largest freshwater sandbar in the world is overrun by crime and petty thefts. Practically every car was broken into and purses, cash, credit cards, and debit cards were taken after the car window is smashed. This is a common occurrence. I will not go back, but if you are impelled to go, save yourself higher insurance premiums by keeping your doors unlocked, windows rolled down, and leave nothing in your car or unattended. Not a cop in sight and every window broken in the two car parking areas I saw.
