Around the city are custom painted and fibreglass guitars in honour of one man who is laid to rest here, Les Paul. The whole town is dedicated to this man with paintings and murals on buildings, as it gets its name as the guitar town. If you have any interest in guitars or les paul this is a must.
This is a cemetery. I guess its "claim to fame" is that Les Paul is buried her and there is a nice memorial. Unless you are a major guitar fan, IT IS A CEMETERY!
Waukesha County Museum staff gave a guided tour focusing on the symbols on the tombstones. We walked through the old section dating back to 1835, and saw where free lots were provided until 1915. We discovered the language of flowers: lily of the valley (rebirth), poppy (eternal sleep), broken ivy borders (searching to come together), and three-pointed leaves (holy trinity),We visited the grave of Lyman Goodnow (1799-1884) and learned of his involvement in 1842 as the first "conductor" in the Underground Railroad and how he helped a slave to her freedom in Canada. We found the memorial to Morris Cutler (1810-1896) and his wife Ruth. Cutler is considered the Founding Father of Waukesha in 1834, when he determined it to be the "perfect place for a new town" a short distance from Milwaukee.Every cemetery needs a ghost story! We have a veiled woman in black who hovers near the Unknown Boy who had been found floating in a quarry in 1921 near the West Avenue entrance.
I could not believe this find. Unfortunately, it is at a Cemetery, however, it is the internment site of Les Paul. Mr. Paul grew up in Waukesha, and his grave site resides in the middle of this tiny cemetery. The granite marker surrounding the grave site is etched with all of his musical accomplishments. He is buried next to his mother, and his real last name; Lester William Polsfuss, is on his tombstone. If you are fortunate, (Tuesday or Wednesday) mornings you may just meet a famous musician who come to the grave site to pay their respects, and leave behind guitar picks.
