Much more than expected. Worth the trip. I had no idea as to the content, but they have a fairly extensive display, and multiple floors as well.
I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. The staff are very knowledgeable and go out of their way to help you get the best experience. The impact of this era on shaping our country and the world is clearly evident through the various displays and exhibits.
What a wonderful afternoon we spent in this great museum,so interesting and very well organised..staff really great and enthusiastic and very knowledgeable. if you are in the area do go along..the $5 will be well spent and leave a little extra to help with the next project..Thank you to the two lovely gentlemen who made two Brits so welcome..we will be back..
On the way to a business meeting in Olean I saw the museum sign and decided to come back after the meeting, although I didn't expect a lot in little Eldred. Two friends and I are glad we did, because this museum is a gem. It is professionally done and I only wish we had more time--allow at least 2 hr., more if you are a WWII buff. The gentleman who welcomed us was friendly and a wealth of information about the museum and Eldred's history as a munitions center.
You would never think that such a fine museum would be found in such a small town, but yet, here it is! They have a fine collection of WWII relics and even a couple of interactive areas for kids and adults alike. Well worth the $5 price of admission. In fact, it's a "must-see" for the price.
Eldred was the site of a munitions factory during WWII. This museum includes a well-told history of the war and the local contribution to the effort. It was larger than expected and gave us new insight into the war and the sacrifices at home. Eldred is also the site of one of the only remaining "S" bridges. Plan on at least an hour; we spent the afternoon. (Plan on Spragues' Maple Farm Restaurant for lunch or dinner in nearby Portville.)
Well worth the stop, didn't know all the history of the area. Needs better parking, only 2-3 place in front so parked across the street in medical building parking lot.
We took our Boy Scout troop here on the way to a weekend camp out. The museum was great. Given the size of the town, we were not expecting much of a museum. The displays were well laid out and labeled. Every room was organized. We were amazed by the stuff they had on display. The museum looked very small from the road. However, when you get inside ther are lots of rooms. We had only planned to spend 45 minutes or an hour. We could have easily spent 2 hours or more. We expect to stop in again next year. Also have to mention that the museum staff went out of their way to make the trip relevant to scouts. They had an impromptu presentation for the boys that was fabulous. If you are ever driving through Eldred, stop in and check this place out. You will not be disappointed.
Every time I go to Eldred I try to go to this museum. The exhibits are rotated so there has been different things to see. The quality of the static and interactive exhibits and videos are top-notch. There is an extensive uniform collection and library on the 3rd floor. The basement has a great collection of artifacts, information on how Hitler rose to power (which is a scary resemblance to our present situation) and newspapers from various towns during the war. You will find information about all of the service branches and the role of the Ammunition Plant in Eldred during the war. Allow yourself a few hours and be prepared to learn a few things.
Excellent collection-worth visiting- give yourself an hour to really see everything.
The volunteers here are knowledgable. They have a great multimedia presentation to show the contribution of the Eldred area to our WWII effort. They have an extensive library and many other exhibits. A well done museum to educate our youth who need to know about firsthand experiences of this time period and a grateful 'thank you' to our veterans.
The Eldred World War II is a treasure worthy of a visit by all Americans. The museum is dedicated to the women war workers of Eldred, Pennsylvania who spent thousands of hours making the munitions for our troops and our Allies and is filled with excellant displays of artifacts and stories over three floors with a research library on the third floor. Included are presentations of all branches of the service during WWII with the emphasis on the stories of the every day soldier, sailor, airman, & marine as opposed to the "stars" of the war, the big time politicians & generals. Their inclusion is incidental. The museum is also a classroom for presenting history to all ages, especially children. There is an interactive "tank mountain" in which visitors deploy radio controlled model tanks over a battlefield mock-up. The staff is most helpful and friendly. The director, Jay Tennies, is dedicated to a vision of a world class museum. Steve Appleby is the curator who I did not get to meet, but heard lots of good things about. Butch Patrick probably will greet you at the front door. For a reasonable admission ($5.00 senior) this visit is a must. Located in downtown Eldred, if you drive take US 6 from either direction to Port Allegany, PA, look for sign to Eldred about 12 miles from Port. Stay at a wonderful bed & breakfast in Port, the Inn on Maple Street, for a real treat. Ask Jay and Sharen about the musuem and the folks that run it. A nearer larger city is Bradford, PA which is a short drive away and has a commercial airport. If your family has a connection to WWII this is a must. Take your WWII heroes if possible. Children especially welcome. Not sure of pets, service dogs probably ok, best to call them. Enjoy your visit! "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it". Santayana
The town is small but the museum is amazing. It contains Medal of Honor recipient Col, Mitchell Paiges memorabilia. There are numerous exhibits and displays. There is a library with thousands of books on the history of the war. If you are a WWII buff, you may want ot attend this by yourself or with other buffs as is takes time to read about each item and watch the videos. For families, they have some exhibits that can be touched and operated which is great for small children. In the opinion of this veteran, this is a museum that should be visited by all Americans. One last note, they can only display about 15% of their entire collection so they rotate the displays.
