The trails were wide enough for two people with few branches or obstructions. In warm weather, the trees and shrubbery look like it will be great for photos and hiking. They are relatively flat, too.
I love to walk around Hickory Run State Park! There are so many nice trails and interesting things to see. I highly recommend exploring this park for couples, families, etc. Great places for kids to run around.I haven't been there in awhile but I'm planning on going again in the spring. If it ever gets here!
We had visited the Park several years ago and decided to stop in to see the Boulder field. we stopped at the park office for information and found out that the road to the "Boulder Field" was closed to motor vehicles and was only available to snowmobiles. We probably spent half an hour discussing the park with the attendants. They were very helpful and provided us with maps and brochures so that we could plan a visit when the mountain laurel were blooming. The Manager suggested that we call him about the first week in June to verify the timing of this event.
With 18 inches of snow on the ground cross country skiing was out of the question. So we decided to go snowshoeing at hickory run state park. We parked at the amphitheater since the parking lot is plowed. We hiked a few miles and found the terrain perfect for out tracks. We really enjoy this park for various outings.
From waterfalls to fishing, hickory run is a great get away to the outdoors. You can hang at the beach and eat ice cream or take a walk on boulder field. This is a great location in Pennsylvania.
This place is really cool. I assume that kids would love it. The boulder field is amazing. The wildlife is nice too. We saw two bears.
A very nice park to visit in PA> In summer there is a nice lake with a sandy beach and facilities. Just have to check about lifeguards, as sometimes State funding ends up with them cutting guards. One 'must do' is a visit to Boulder Field. It's a deposit of boulders from the ice age, and is truly awesome to see.
The lake side beach is good. The state park is quite big and we were not able to cover the entire park, however, we went towards the lake side and had good time with friends. Wish we had more time to explore more...
This is the second time I have been here. It is truly a magnificent creation. It amazes me that this would be where it is at. I would come here again. I just wish that there was a t-shirt I could buy depicting the boulder field.
Have never seen anything like it. Amazing geology due to glacier age. Must do if you're in the area. Worth the 3+ mile down a 1 lane road to get there.
We had an afternoon to kill while visiting family in Hazelton and went to check out this park. The mid October colors of the forest were really beautiful and we enjoyed driving through the park which is free to do. From what we could tell you only have to pay if you are camping. There are plenty of trails and places to picnic or just enjoy the scenery. We especially enjoyed seeing Boulder Field and reading about it's unusual history.
My boyfriend and I went car camping in late September and it was a great experience. We stayed at the state park campground and the sites were well spaced and some were pretty secluded. The hiking and boulder field were really cool. I would recommend the Shades of Death Trail for the scenery. The campground store is great too- we found some classic 90s gear.
We stopped here while staying in the Poconos to specifically do some hiking. It had been raining in the morning so we didn't start till around 11. It was a Saturday but the trails were not very full. We went to the park office and got the trail map and took the Shades of Death trail that started right there. Great trail, a bit challenging though for children or pets. There was a lot of hiking over rocks that were slippery from the wet fallen leaves but the trees were really changing colors and it was beautiful. Trails were easy enough to follow. We followed it till the end and then took another trail that would back through the campground area and brought us back to the park office. We were on trails for about 2 and half hours. There were plenty of picture spots and areas to sit and relax, also places to do a picnic lunch especially closer to the campgrounds and amphitheater. There were also bathroom facilities at certain spots. All in all very clean park and a great enjoyable day. Park staff in the office was very helpful also. Plenty of places to park. We drove up to the beach area which was great too. Would like to try to get up there in the summer when it's open but we walked around a lot up there and still very nice area.
Just came back from camping here again. Glade to tell you the camp store is now under new management, and is back to the old store it was ! This store has everything you need if you forget anything on your trip! Even has coffee and hot chocolate ready to drink! I am glade to see this store run as it should be !!!!!!
Visited the park over the weekend and did the shadows of death trail. Sounds awful but it's a fairly easy hike with some pretty waterfalls scattered throughout. About a mile and a half round trip with lots of roots.. you must be attentive because it's very easy to trip. Otherwise a nice way to spend a little time outdoors. After that we went to the boulder park a huge area of naturally strewn boulders left over from an ice age. More of a crowd here as everyone likes to channel themselves by climbing on the rocks it's actually pretty interesting definitely worth a look if you're up in this area. There is a visitor center at the park entrance with potatoes potties and the park staff is very helpful and can offer maps, directions, information and history about the area.
