This trail is awesome. I have done from Newville to Shippensburg and back with family and our church youth group. Always a good ride... great exercise and beautiful scenery! Not heavily traveled but I have always felt safe. Excited for this trail to be extended!
This well maintained trail is one of my favorites... I'm overweight so i can't handle the trails that have steep inclines... this trail is mostly level, lightly traveled, dog friendly, horse friendly and has very nice scenery. My last foster dog and I used this trail a lot. I enjoy this trail so much that i bought a membership :-)
we made a special trip up York to bike this trail. It's a nice trail, with parking and restrooms at each trailhead. It's not a particularly wide trail, but it was so lightly traveled when we were there it didn't matter. On a clearer day, the view of the mountains is probably beautiful. Not a lot to see here other than farmland. But a very nice, peaceful trail.
Truly enjoyed riding my bike on this trail it is a good trail for the whole family to do. My only complaint and it is not a complaint is that it might not be challenging enough. The ease of riding on this trail made enjoyable for the family to ride together and stay together.
We didn't even know this trail existed but its a very nice trail with a bathroom at the newville stop. Worth a visit if you are into walking.
I live in Newville and this trail was one of the reasons I decided to live here. The trail head in Newville is very nice, bathrooms are in a replica of the original train station although I suppose a slightly smaller scale. The trail within Newville is either concrete or paved and is used as a testing site for Penn Dot approved contractors for testing machines for required surface finish. The rest of the trail is crushed limestone with pavement on both sides of each of the road crossings. At the Oakville Road crossing bathrooms are available a short distance from the trail in their park. The Shippensburg Park also has restroom facilities and is the unofficial start/end point even though the trail map shows more. There is some movement to add to the trail, Newville to Carlisle but a few property owners are stead fast against it passing through/near their property so please respect the rights of the property owners the trail abuts. There are also benches along the trail to enjoy the great outdoors. Historical plaques were added along the trail this year.
The Newville site is a little out of the way but the parking is good and there is a nice bathroom facility. Variety of wooded and open field areas. You can go from Newville to Shippensburg (or vice versa). Definately recommend!
We never found the trailhead in Newville due to road construction and maybe a slightly confused GPS, but we did find the trail and had a great scenic ride. Pay attention at crossings, most are farm roads and the machinery you may see on them are big and moving fast - but everyone we saw waved and smiled!
If you love the outdoors and trails, be sure to check this one out! Pack a picnic and stop along the way.
Walking, Running, Biking, Horse Back Riding - you can do kit all on the rail trail. The trail, which runs between Newville and Shippensburg is a pleasant place for any of those activities. The trail is mostly well maintained cinders with nicely mown berms. Shade is the norm, but some stretches much mote open.
