Due to my visit day and the museum's fall schedule, I was not able to visit the inside displays, so my review is of what I could access. The grounds are open for looking around, and they have quite a good selection of engines and rolling stock, given the small size of the town. Almost as good, you can stand by the nicely maintained old station marked North East and watch the frequent trains go by on the two main lines that pass very close. Another tip, check out the (small) town, their city park, and the beach area at the very north end of SR89. All very nice.
Nice place to see restoration of the old North East depot. They also have restored trains you can walk thru. Terrific way to see the currently running trains if you happen to be there when they come thru. Terrific place to take young children who are interested in trains.
I have been coming to the Lake Shore Railway Museum for years not only to admire their extensive collection of locomotives, rolling stock, and railroad memorabilia in their historic LS&MS station, but also to watch mainline action on both the CSX and NS lines that go right past the museum. It's the safest place in Erie County to get your train fix and the viewing area is open even when the museum isn't. They even have a scanner hooked up to a speaker outside so you can hear the dispatcher and (at least for NS) the engineers calling the signals. The all-volunteer staff is always friendly and welcoming.
With a well preserved station stuffed with all sorts of railway related memorabilia and a several tracks of rolling stock to inspect, definitely a place to visit if you have any interest in trains. Worth a detour.Being right beside the mainline, plenty of trains go by to provide more photo opportunities.Friendly volunteers were on hand to explain and describe the many objects on display.Fees are by donation.
Staying at Erie on vacation during a visit with our family in the USA, we noticed in the local paper "Whats on", an Easter Egg hunt here at Lake Shore Railway Museum. Our family of son, daughter in law and 2 granddaughters went there, while we went on beach clean up at Presque Isle, we then went on to join them in North East. What an absolute delight this visit was! So much to see and explore, you were allowed on nearly everything, and there were plenty of people on hand to answer any questions you may have. Lots to see and do, and if you wanted time out, the trains carrying goods thundered by a regular intervals. The coffee pot was never off the boil and we met some really knowledgeable and pleasant folk. The egg hunt was successful, with our youngest at 6 years old, claiming 3rd prize, which she quickly spent in the shop - somewhere else it was good to browse around, and then the model layout and lots of old photos on the walls. The museum has open days throughout the season, and during this an old carriage is used for lunches and snacks. Please visit - the hardworking volunteers appreciate everyone who does and are glad of your support.
