Perfect place for a PERFECT RIDE.... Really nice area to take a ride and the Horses are so GENTLE....
Don't go - it's not there! The clues should have been clear to us before we set off to find the mules - the phone number was disconnected, there were no signs in the area advertising the stable, the stable was not listed anywhere else on the internet - We were VERY disappointed after being so excited about the idea of riding mules. After looking long and hard, we found the road which was chained off and marked with a "no trespassing" sign. A fellow at a nearby stable told us that the Pocono Adventures Riding Stable, with the mules, had closed in April 2011. Please take this "attraction" off of the list so others do not have to deal with this disappointment.
I've been going up to the Poconos for some time, and I was iffy about going to Pocono Adventures for the first time by myself. I'm an experienced rider, and I knew I could handle it. It was July of 2010, even though it says August 2010. I love this place and their trails. They take you up streams, up hills, down hills, through the forest. And it's guided. They have TWO trail guides depending on how big the group is. Now, last year when I went, I got a one of a kind trail 'cause I was the only one that signed up for the 2-hour trail. :) The guy saw I was experienced 'cause I showed up in my chaps and own riding helmet. He took me off and took me on the trail and OFF the trail, too! It had to be one of the best trail rides I had ever taken. I'll be coming up to the Poconos this fall and will definitely be going there for a fall ride! :)
I was very pleased with my trail ride at Pocono Adventures. First, they are the best deal in town, with prices that are about half that of other riding stables in the area. In addition, they use mules for the trails, which is a great improvement over the "nose to tail" boring horse rides that you usually experience. The trails are all natural and not prepared or cleared in any way. I've been riding horses for 30 years and I can tell you that a horse would never be able to handle that terrain. The mules definitely required more muscle to control, but you don't have to worry about them bucking you off or spooking at a falling branch. Their gait is also much more comfortable for the trail, especially on the two hour ride. The guides were great. Their instructions before and during the ride were detailed and helpful. They were informative, humorous and very good riders. The guides and their animals know their jobs well and they do it right! After reading some of the other reviews, I have to laugh at some of the supposedly "experienced" riders who complain about the mules' behavior. I guess if you hop on a broke horse and ride around a ring, it doesn't really prepare you for riding the trail. As a matter of fact, there was an allegedly "experienced" rider on our ride and all she did was complain about not being able to steer the small mule she was riding. After watching her for a while, I didn't really see anything in her technique that impressed me much!I highly recommend this ride for anyone. If you are a novice, its a great way to learn. If you're an experienced rider looking for a trail ride that is actually challenging and fun, this is the place to be.
This place is awful!! I can ride any reasonably well-trained horse, but a mule's mouth is like concrete! The first time I went, they tried to put me on a mule and I pitched a hissy and MADE them put me on a real horse. The second time, four years later, I was told rather roughly that they owned no horses (saw a few at the trough when we got back though....) and was put on the biggest mule they had. It stood over three feet taller than I and had a single reign that was less than half the distance of its neck. When I got on its back and told it to go, it took the bit in its mouth, jerked its head down and the reign out of my hands, and ran with me. Three of the guides and the hateful owner finally got it corralled and I got off as quickly as I could. I am 5'4" and a rather small young woman, so I pitched another hissy and made them put me on a smaller mule. It was a quieter animal, and one of the guides was very nice, telling me the first animal had been doing that all day, but there were comments made about me and the smaller mule liked to stop dead still every few minutes. In short, I took a look over the valley and decided that next time we pass through the Poconos, I'll take a look at the HORSES I saw at the riding stables next door. I shudder to think of a small child or a novice rider being pawned off with one of their animals.
My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves here! It was our first experience riding and we were pleasantly surprised at how professionally run and efficiently staffed Pocono Adventures was. The animals were amazing and a pleasure to ride, and the trail was absolutely breathtaking. We took the 2 hour ride and we could have stayed on for another 4 hours. We plan on returning in the near future. Thank you Pocono Adventures!
The fact that they don't put you on a boring old trail is awsome. They have awsome guides and the animals are the best....."i'll see you soon Buddy" It realy is an adventure and the experience is truley priceless.
First of all I assumed a riding stable would have horses...not mules. The place was kind of a dump and I would have turned and left except I had foolishly given them my credit card number to reserve a spot. The helmets provided were cheap and beat up. The mules were mostly well behaved but some kept wandering off the track. The "trail" was a narrow rocky path through the woods and we went at a snail's pace. My 8-year old daughter, who was a little nervous, ended up second from the end in a line of 16 mules and I was near the front, and there is no way to change places once you get started. No one was watching her and I spent the whole ride looking behind me. Near the end of the ride one of the mules decided to go off on its own and the 3 guides that were with us got very panicky, and the poor little girl on it was very scared. The main guide told her she should control her animal better. I didn't really have confidence in the guides and they weren't very likeable at all. I probably sound like a whiner but we live in an area with many riding stables and my daughter rides and competes in shows, and I have never come across a place like this. I just wanted it to be over and get out of there. And to top it off they ask you to leave the guides a tip before you leave! I would try Happy Trails Riding Stables instead next time, they looked much nicer and had horses, and they were right next to this place.
My husband and I try to ride when we are traveling and have experienced many stables. This unique stable was a great experience. The guides were wonderful, the animals are well cared for and tame, we received excellent instructions, and the two-hour tour we chose went through some interesting and beautiful terrain. We do recommend it.
I have been on many of trailrides,.but these mules cant be beat,..the guides were wonderful and entertaining,..the animals well behaved,..excellent instructions,..and the trails were very scenic,..we did the 2 hour ride and i would recomend it , even for beginners,..my whole family cant wait to ride there again
What ever you do, do NOT give them your credit card information when booking a trip, take your chances and book the day of the trip instead. Besides, if they are fully booked, there are PLENTY of other places to ride within 10 minutes of this place (Carson's, Mountain Creek, Pocono Manor, etc). We called two weeks before our trip, and they said that they would be booked solid unless we gave them our credit card info to hold a ride in advance. We (big mistake on our part) gave them our info, then AFTER they had the credit card info stated that they will accept no cancellations. Well, two weeks later bad luck would have it that the night before the day of our ride, I had to go to the emergency room for an accident, and had been on pain killers that evening and was very ill from it. Now, I am an experienced rider and I know it is not a great idea (nor a SAFE idea) to get on a horse you don't know on a trail you don't know and try to ride while you are dizzy from pain killers. My husband called the stable as soon as they opened, four hours prior to the ride and simply asked if we could reschedule for the following day (not cancel) as I should be better by the following day. The woman who answered the phone was extremely RUDE and DISCOURTIOUS and snapped "We don't accept cancellations-and we have your $60.00 now!" and HUNG UP THE PHONE! Now, I understand if we had totally blown off the trip, not called to inform them, etc. I could even understand a small cancellation/rescheduling fee, but to take the full amount is crazy, and what futher upsets me is that my husband tried to work with them for another solution and they immediately threw up a wall. That is NOT the way to deal with a customer in any business, especially when you are in the tourism business. What would they have done if I chose to do the ride, had a problem with vertigo, and fallen and gotten seriously injured??? Luckily we ended up having a great time at three other riding stables that week, and I would reccommend any of them EXCEPT Pocono Adventures. Buyer Beware!
Poconos riding stable was terrible. My husband and I went there on a Saturday and reserved for a 45 min. trail. We arrived there earlier than we thought and was asked by a worker name AJ if we want to take a 2 hour trail instead. I was hesitating a little, but we decided to go after all. If you are a person that just wants to experience a horse ride, and a beginner then this is not the place to go. As we continued along the trail I began having problems. I for one have no problem admitting if I don't master the skill on riding a horse, but you don't need to humiliate a person in order for them to straighten up. This employer AJ began telling us the experience we would have compared to other riding stables. Then he went on to tell some horrific stories of people who got seriously hurt. That scared me to death. Then he singled me out by telling what I was doing wrong in front of the group, while he praised the others. Correct me if I’m wrong, but aren't you suppose to show the person what they did wrong one on one instead of making an example out of them. This is not Bonanza, unless you want that experience so be it. By then I didn't want to carry on with the trip. But, with some convincing from others I decided to continue. Now we were getting ready to learn how to trot on the horse. By then I was upset and my husband and I declined from trotting. They told me to pull my horse to the side while the others began riding. All of a SUDDEN my horse began to follow their lead. By then I was frightened and all I could think of was the horrific stories he told us when we to took a quick break earlier. I lost control by then and FELL OFF THE HORSE! I was banged and bruised up, but no serious damage that I know of. But this AJ had the audacity to ask my husband did he want to continue riding. Not once he ask if I was okay. Then when we came back to the ranch as I was talking to my husband, he blatantly interrupted us and mentioned how well my husband was riding and wished that he were able to continue the full ride. As if his thoughts were saying that I messed up his chance of an experienced ride, being that I made a mistake and fell and hurt myself. Well, EXCUSE ME for being hurt. He never looked my way and never said a word to me. He was very unprofessional and disrespectful. I never experienced that from other riding stables that I have been to. I should have stuck to the 45 min. trail in the first place. From this experience I will never ride a horse again.
This stable offers the best trails and guides that we have ever seen. They are friendly, helpful, and make you feel safe every bit of the trail. The prices are wonderful. The 2 hour trails include a lot of up and down hills that makes the ride very exciting and enjoyable. I will definitely rise here again.
