The marina is a nice place to jog or walk. There's a mile loop through the park along with pavilions, benches, etc. Beware the lookout it was a hangout for old guys looking for love hence the nickname pickle park.
Free admission, plenty of parking, but bring your own trail map. Restrooms, picnic shelters, and a childrens playground are at the upper end of the park.
I was someone disapointed at how unclean the park was kept. Trash laying around in the grass, playground and parking areas. There was plenty of picnic tables all around and bathrooms available.
This place is OK just for a walk. But there is nothing else here. There are a few places to take some nice photos but that's it. This place is OK to see one time, but that's all I could take. It would be just to boring to go here multiple times just for a walk. I can do that at home.
The Shikellamy State Park Marina located on the Island between Sunbury & Northumberland is my "go to place" for walks, bike rides, & kayaking. Also good for just spending time there relaxing, picnicking & watching the boats on the Susquehanna River plus keeping an eye out for eagles & hawks soaring up and down the river. We are very fortunate to have the park open year round rain or shine because every day and every season has its share of beauty from the view up the West Branch down to the confluence of the river, around the island and Blue Hill across the river and the Point, and the trees are wonderful to look at any day of the year. The park is well maintained, has clean bathrooms, great walking trails--shady in summer, several covered picnic pavilions, no charge for parking or use of park, is a very popular place to walk dogs & dogs need to be on leash & cleaned up after. In season the boat docks are put in place ready to dock a boat after a ride or fishing on the river, also there is a daily use boat trailer parking. Also check out the trains frequently crossing the railroad bridge. The marina is a beautiful local treasure and I'm grateful it is right here available to visit everyday!!
While travelling down Rt 15 we were looking for a quiet spot to stop briefly and eat our picnic lunch. South of Lewisburg we saw a little sign for the Shikellamy Overlook and turned off. Signage from this direction is not great but eventually we found the spot perched high up on the West bank of the Susquehanna. There were great views looking down on Northumberland and Sunbury, as well as the confluence of two main branches of the Susquehanna River. You can also see the remainder of the park and the unique inflatable fabric dam. There are both individual picnic tables as well as some larger pavillions, and the all important pit toilets. It is a great place for a picnic on a nice day!
