The enthusiasm of the tour guide is just as good asthe Bradford House. You really feel as if you cansee the previous owners and their lives. The gardenis charming!
The Bradford House is a must see piece of American history. Here is the seat of the Whiskey Rebellion and the first real test of our government to enforce its laws. Built in 1788, in the Georgian style, it was one of the first stone homes in Washington, PA, thus considered a mansion. It contains a wonderful little museum and the stories of the home, its residents and its place in history are told by very knowledgeable docents. When visiting here, one must remember for the time frame of 1788 to 1800, Washington, PA was the frontier. The Bradford House is where you and your children can see and feel history first hand. And from here please go to the LeMoyan House on East Maiden Street (almost around the corner) for more history. These two homes are MUST sees. I have to add I was impressed by the restoration as I remember when the back wall was caved in and Christmas trees where sold from the front “parlor” room. The home was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1983.While in the Bradford House, be sure to put enough money in the parking meter for 2 hours to be on the safe side…. “meter- maids” in Washington are overly zealous.
