I wouldn't consider this a "thing to do" more like a place to visit. The chocolate is amazing, albeit very pricey. The store smells amazing and they have pieces of chocolate to sample. Stop in, grab a truffle and enjoy!
This place is really expensive, but it is good to buy for special occasions. I bought my wife some of their chocolate twice now for our anniversaries. She loves it and it is well worth the price.
As a West Chester alum, I am slightly biased but Elcat has the best truffles Way better than the average Gertrude Hawking type store. Especially recommend the salt Carmel truffles or try some of the pepper chocolate stuff. Def worth a stop, even it's just blow a couple bucks trying one or two.
It was an impulse buy. There was a great magazine review posted outside the shop so we bopped in. We selected three flavors of truffles and bought 12 total. After the sticker shock -- prices were not easy to find, and those little truffles were $2.50 EACH!, we left the shop. We didn't want to wreck our dinner so we waited to taste. We couldn't discern what flavor they were. They just tasted "floral" -- which is not what you want when you purchased Sea Salt Carmel. Hoping for a different result, we waited and tried again later. Again, the flavors were unidentifiable. I love good chocolates. These were not. I dumped the remainder and am using the box to sort earrings. The box is great.
Just got back from a great trip in Lancaster County. Stopped at E'clat chocolat in Lancaster and was hugely disappointed. The people there were very nice, but ultimately after buying their product I felt taken. Their truffles were about 1 fourth the size of a normal chocolate shop truffle. Rather than being about a fourth the price, they were double the price. I was expecting extravagant taste for that kind of money. What we got was underwhelming chocolate (Guittard puts it to shame). Worse, the filling lacked vibrancy. It was too subtle and did not taste like much. It had an odd aftertaste. My wife, a great lover of chocolate, tried 2 different flavors and did not want any more. I brought them home to our teenage son who eats anything and he said they were the worst chocolates he had had. That may be a bit much, but when factoring in the price, I agree. I would never go back.
