Every square inch of this place is covered with beautiful greenery and is speckled with breathtaking Chihuly blown glass masterpieces. The piece hanging in the foyer is valued at over $1M! It's a great place to visit to walk off a big lunch, as there is much to see inside. Grab a coffee or tea when you first walk in and enjoy the scenery! Don't forget to check out the vegetable garden on the roof. They use the crops in their cafe onsite!
Went to Phipps in January and enjoyed walking through the different rooms, however, the main reason our daughter took us there was for one exhibit which ended up being closed for refurbishment Another was closed due to a private function. For $15 a person, I think we should have had access to the whole conservatory. What was open to us was amazing though
On a subzero day filled with snow, ice and sleet, which is standard winter weather in Pittsburgh, there is no better place to switch to spring and summer than Phipps Botanical Gardens of Pittsburgh. Stay as long as you want under the glass houses.
Such a beautiful gem in Pittsburgh. If you've never been here doesn't, matter the age, you need to go. All lot of really cool plants and its absolutely gorgeous inside. They also have stuff like a cool train set and play area for kids. It really works for any age group! Also had a friends mom get remarried here as well and it was absolutely gorgeous. Also a perfect place in winter or summer. If you're here during Christmas time I 100% recommend going to see the amazing Christmas display they set up! Gorgeous! Just one of those places you have to go in Pittsburgh!
If there is a big crowd there, come back another time. The crowds daisy the ambiance. This is a place where you can slowly walk quietly and smell the flowers and admire the orchids. It is simultaiously relaxing and energizing.
There is nothing like walking into this oasis of greenery on a cold, grey, winter day in Pittsburgh. Phipps is a must-see and wonderful experience. If you live in Pittsburgh, I recommend getting the membership and enjoying the conservatory as much as possible. In the winter, it's a beautiful escape. Find a bench, sit down, and enjoy the serenity!
An absolutely beautiful place. Wish we would have visited in spring when we could have enjoyed the outdoor gardens as well.
Phipps may not top the list of places to see when folks are planning a trip to Pittsburgh. That's a mistake. Phipps is an oasis of botanical treasures. It's atmosphere renews visitors' appreciation for nature and provides all who tour it with an extraordinary and exploratory experience.
I usually go to Phipps once each season to see the changing exhibits. It is so nice to see green when outside is white and it is nice to cool off in the jungles of plants when the sun is beating down outside. The one way walk about is such a calming adventure. The fruits, the orchid room, the English garden, the seasonal butterflies, the trains, the holiday displays-- all are wonderful! There is a restaurant and a shop which are good but I dream of the day I can bring a book and find a bench and just stay for awhile.
You can really stay all day here (3 hours to see it all is my estimate for a run through) to explore all of it, plus it has a good café so you can have lunch as well. This has really expanded since my childhood (alas it was free then) and now it has rooms with plants and flowers from all over the world. We saw special exhibits on bonsai and on tropical plants of Borneo. It was zero degrees outside, but we put our coats in lockers inside. It can be a bit tricky for those with walking problems, as the paths can be wet and slippery. Also the parking is quite far away and no handicapped parking, as far as I could see. They do have warning signs for the especially difficult paths, but most are quite navigable. Lots to see and the scent of green is so wonderful. Various Chiluly sculptures complement the real plants.
Phipps provides a wonderful experience. The trail throughout the greenhouse allows you to travel at your own pace, and spend as much or as little time as you'd like in each room. There are informative signs to learn about plants. One of my favorite aspects show close you can get to truly observe and appreciate the plants. The scent inside is earthy and fresh, especially in the flower rooms. Phipps changes throughout the season, so you'll get a different experience if you go at different times of the year. It is a perfect little haven in the midst of the city.
This was our first time visiting the Phipps Conservatory. We especially enjoyed the Christmas Tree and the polar bear winter display.
If you are into flowers and plants this is an attraction you must visit. The theme is changed often and is exceptionally beautiful during holidays. I visit this attraction often and spend several hours there
My favorite Phipps show is in the spring. The fragrance of hyacinths pervades the air. The entire Conservatory is eye candy. The cactus and orchid rooms are a delight. Definitely lets you know that spring is here.
This conservatory has something for everyone. No matter what time of year, spring summer, autumn or winter, the flower displays are breathtaking. During summer the outdoor gardens are a beautiful display for so many flowers and the winter outdoor exhibit is worth enduring the cold for a while. Phipps is large enough to be interesting and beautiful but not so spread out that a person cannot do the entire conservatory and grounds without getting exhausted. The layout has been well planned over the years and everything is kept in tiptop condition. Stop for a little resfreshment in the restaurant and don't miss the gift shop for some unusual finds. Our family visits at least once a year and then go back for the winter wonderland.
