Every day at Macy's you can listen to beautiful organ music. Check out the schedule and be sure to make it a priority.
The historic Wanamaker organ plays daily at lunchtime and then frequently during the Christmas holiday season. I love standing in the center court with the eagle listening to wonderful music wafting across the floor for all to hear. I can stand back and watch the organist create these fantastic sounds from classic to more contemporary music and love it all. It is such a special break in the day to come into the building and hear a world class organist playing our magnificent world class organ in a department store!
Who would think to go see an organ concert in a Macy's? Well, everyone should! There are 45-minute concerts at noon and 5:30 almost every day. It was exhilarating to see and hear the stupendous Wanamaker Organ (.org), and then to see the console up close and ask questions of the organist and assistants. afterwards. Kudos to Macy's and the Friends of the WO for keeping this great tradition alive.
I had no idea the Macy's in Philadelphia housed this incredible organ, but was lucky enough to be there when a concert took place. It is one of the largest pipe organs in the country and is expertly played three times a day. Plan your trip to Philadelphia around one of those performances (which are free) and you will not be disappointed. You can check it out at the Friends of the Wanamaker Organ website.
Lovely and beautiful, but not much to interact with. Check out the sound, and enjoy, then shop. The organ is in Macys department store, so the visit is limited to the sales floors and perhaps above near it...
We scheduled our tour in Philadelphia to stop at Macy's to hear the organ at 12:00 p.m. The hall it was in is beautiful. The organist played a hymn at first and then he went into Rhapsody in Blue with a melody of Gershwin mixed in. My favorite!
I grew up in Philadelphia, and as a little girl we visited Wanamakers for the christmas show. It was narrated by John Facenda. My husband and I have gone back over the years and have been able to share this great experience with our children, and our grandson. It has been a tradition for us.Wanamakers has evolved over the years, it used to be an exclusive department store, and is not as elaborate as it once was, but it still has a beautiful architectural presence. it is worth seeing. Not sure how old the organ is, but I remember when I was growing up the organ was played on a daily basis.
Big organ that sounds great. Loved it. Liked to stand opposit it in the atrium. You can shop while you listen
The world famous Wanamaker organ makes this show complete from the 1st time I saw it in 1958 up to present day it still entertains all who come to see it, it is truly a shame that Macy's elects not to have the organ play on a daily basis because I can remember as a child at the top of the hour they would play it and thereby creating a better shopping experience.
The organ accompanies the light show. Children are amazed as well as adults with the coordination of music and lights
We went to shop at Macy's but were treated to a beautiful organ concert at noon time. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the concert lasted. an hour.
I remember coming here (when it was Wanamaker's) as a kid and being enthralled with the organ, especially when played. It is now a Macy's store but I was glad to see they kept the organ. It sounds wonderful and a group called "friends of the Wanamaker organ" work to keep it in good condition, refurbishing when needed. It is quite a large and impressive organ and worth a look.
Take the family, sing some carols and get nostalgic. Then walk about 5 blocks to the Comcast Center and treat yourself to a 21st Century version of the Christmas tradition. Wanamakers and Comcast is the perfect combination of holiday spirit in Center City Philly.
The Wanamaker Organ is the world largest pipe organ, takes 07 stores of the former Wanamaker store (currently Macy's), and it sounds amazing!!!! Check on the store website what is the schedule, and take some time to hear it!!!On Christmas time there's a light show followed by the organ, that is very very nice!!!!!
Located in the iconic Wannamakers Department Store (now Maceys) this is the largest working musical instrument in the world with 28,000 pipes over 7 stories high. It is located in the main sales floor of Maceys. The pipes you actually can see are for decoration only. The sound is amazing to say the least. Five people work full time to maintain the instrument. Contact the store to find out when demonstrations are presented.
