We are returning home from a weekend trip when we arrive in Cadillac. It is time for a break and the Heritage Nature Trail/Study Area (235-acre preserve) in William Mitchell State Park is a perfect spot. The loop trail (less than 3 miles) is easy and there are exhibit signs along the trail. We walk through the forest and wetlands crossing a footbridge over Black Creek. It is cold so not much wildlife to see but we had the trail to ourselves. Being a wetland, the insects are probably a problem during warmer months … but not today!
Can't beat the views! We love being on lakes and rivers! My husband did some night fishing park closes at 10:00pm but it was cold so that was alright with us, maybe in the summer months we would want to stay longer than 10:00! Peaceful at night.
Beautiful water.Cool but not cold in August.A great place for family fun.Looks like a great place to camp, too (we were in cabins art Birchwood Resort).
Loved watching the sunset from here under the shade of the trees. Lots of boats puttering by as well. Nice and relaxing.
Loved the setting between two lakes. Can be hard and dangerous to cross the highway. The whole place is very clean and family friendly.
It is right along the canal that joins Lake Cadillac and Lake Mitchell. The canal has been beautified and looks wonderful. There is also a new pedestrian bridge on M-115 that crosses the canal. Very nice. The campsites are a tab to close to each other and the smoke does get thick in the evening
Even though we don't live too far from this park we enjoy a weekend or two camping near the water. There are campsites that back up to the canal that attaches Lake Cadillac and Lake Mitchell. Can be enjoyable watching boats passing by. The sites are decent size, some sunnier than others. Have run into an issue during heavy rain. Regardless of the efforts from the DNR many sites retain water. Carl T. Johnson center is across the road with fun activities and nature trails.
We're frequently visitors to this campground - before Memorial Day and after Labor Day. It's convenient and well cared for. In general, the lots are roomy and easy enough to get in and out of. Unlike lots of State campgrounds, this one manages to maintain fairly grassy sites, in spite of heavy summer use. The canal front lots are nice for fishing and boaters. but can be quite noisy with the traffic on the road right across the canal. Also, M-115 runs right along the front of the park, so if you select a lot toward the southeast corner you'll have less highway noise.
I would like to camp again there. park well taken care of. Restrooms need some improving though, although they were clean, they need some attention. Mens room needs some ventilation running, I think this would get rid of some of the "mens room smell". Doors on stalls need some repair. Staff was very friendly and helpful! too bad our visit got cut short to alot of rain and the camper roof leaking :(
Nice State Park, has really neat museum incase of weather or really cool just to see. Good fishing, and a top notch state park with fishing swimming, bike rental, full bath and shower, firewood to buy on site, public access, all around good time in a decent small town.
