Awesome women work there and I can not say enough about their helpfulness and loads of information. Great resource before you visit.
Spent a night at Beaver Island cruising home on out sailboat. Stopped in the Community Center just to take a look. Found warm friendly people with an abundance of offerings. The night we were in town they were hosting two of the appeasers from Antiques Road Show. What a great time! Thank you!
Run, do not walk, to see these guys. Virtuoso performance guitar and mandolin, respectively. They play around Traverse City, MI. and travel about performing their brand of strumming and picking very high energy "country" style music. They are at the top of their game. Catch them if you can.
Beautiful building, wonderful, helpful staff! They will help you find your way around this wonderful island. You can check your emails here with free wifi too. Movies sometimes and stage shows from music to plays. A wonderful gathering place for Beaver Island.
Looking for a cold non-alcoholic beverage, a game of pool, wi-fi, a locally-produced comedy show or use of a computer the island's new Community Center is the place to go. The staff is righly proud of this gem!
Through bake sales, raffles, and donations the people of this vibrant island managed to build a wonderful community center that features films, live theatre, musical performances, and special events. Snacks are offered along with warm hospitality!
On a visit to the island I stopped in to see the center. Wonderful staff and I decided to bid on an item to help with the fundraising to help keep the place running. I bid and won cub tickets!!!! I was happy to have them and help the place that offers wifi and restrooms and just a place to rest waiting on the ferry. Great job!!!
I casually peeked into the community center just to see what is was. They had some brochures on the wall of local businesses and I perused them, and then bought an island map from them. They also had some snacks, and drinks available. Then I noticed a few people using their laptops at some tables on the first floor. So, I asked "JoAnn" who happened to be working, what the place was and she explained the fund raising for the center, and wow, what a job they did. This is truly the heart of the island, in my honest opinion. They have some meals available and I saw a few elderly eating there. I am not sure of the program, if there is even a program for such. But I believe anyone can buy the meal they have cooking. They have a great 2nd floor available to everyone. Tables, chairs, a large flat screen TV, movies, games (maybe), and 4 public computers. You can also plug in your own electronics. They have lots of activities here as well, and it sure is the hangout of the young crowd in the afternoons. But all ages of people use it. They also have a wonderful "studio" if you will, that allows movies to be shown at the center, along with plays, and other such events. The place is 4 years old and they told me it took 14 years to raise the funds to build the center.I am sure there is much more to this wonderful place than I am describing. However, for the tourist, knowing about its existence is a great thing! Bathrooms (clean as a whistle), a microwave, computers, coffee-all for your use. Everyone was very helpful and very, very, friendly. I want to really commend JoAnn for chatting with me every day about the island, island life, and the various options that were available to me during my visit. Be sure and stop in if visiting beautiful Beaver Island.
