Be sure to stop at Goodhart and shop at the little store and the grocery store for some great cheese. Buy the book about Goodhart's famous murder and then head south towards the Pond Hill Farm. A farm owned and run by Jimmy and Marci Spencer with everything freshly grown and a barnyard for the kids to feed the animals and a great wine bar (from their own vineyard). You'll return time after time to the Pond Hill Farm. Oh! and yes at the beginning of the Tunnel of Trees is Legs Inn with a beautiful garden overlooking Lake Michigan and some really great Polish food.
A trip down M119 during the Fall was a "must-do" according to every stranger whom we met while in Michigan's UP during October. Boy, were they RIGHT! We hit the Tunnel of Trees midday on a partially sunny day, which was perfect. It's not for the faint of heart, because the 2-lane road seems only as if it's 1.5 lanes -- and it lacks a center line. You must anticipate bike riders on the quite narrow and curvy road. The homes along the road are gorgeous, whether small or large. And the occasional views you can see of Lake Michigan are stunning. There are not places to pull over and take shots of the vista, unless you are bold enough to pull off into someone's driveway (not recommended). On the South end of the Tunnel of Trees is Harbor Springs, an idyllic little town. Taking a trip down the Tunnel of Trees is worth a "detour" off I-75 in order to experience! I took a video of most of the trip, while my husband drove. Anyone who views even a small snippet of the video is amazed and awestruck.
This was our first time on this stretch of road, and it was during peak colors. What a treat. It was amazing. Take your time. I previously read that this was one of the few paved state highways without a center line, and the width violated state standards. Nobody was in a hurry on the Sunday morning we drove it. The colors and views were amazing. It would have been nice to have turn offs available to see the views, but seems the entire stretch is private.
This scenic road is a hidden jewel in MI well worth touring. Took it on the way back from the UP. Take your time and take lots of pictures. Stop at antique stores and unique spots. No hurry. No worry.
This was our 1st bike trip through this area. Take your time and enjoy nature. The road is narrow but wide enough to pass another viehicle. Go in the fall the color is beautiful.
The fall colors on,the tunnel of trees were breathtaking. The road was quiet so it was nice to go slowly through the trees. We travelled on a weekday so it was not very busy. I am sure it is crowed on the weekends.
The area was beautiful. It is a must see place. The autumn color is perfect! Harbor Springs and Petoskey have everything you'll need from great shops and restaurants to the beautiful water, trees and scenery!
This was a nice drive--you will not get a "view," more the experience of being in the trees. Some interesting houses to see, a few peeks of the lake--but really, it's about being in a tunnel of trees.
Like the sign says.... next gas 20 miles. As the other motorcyclists have said, this is a fun road. Having did the Tail of the Dragon, this road ranks right up there with the exception that the road is not in the best shape. Lots of crown on the road and watch out for sand/dirt on the corners. Stunning scenery and some interesting old cottages.
We were staying at a campground in the area and someone recommended this to us. It was well worth the drive. We even found a spot to stop and take some pictures. Views of Lake Michigan from this road are out of this world. It also goes through a couple quaint little village-type towns that were fun to stop at.
This scenic drive can be taken from Harbor Springs by following M-119 or from the Mackinac Bridge by taking US31 exit and then turning right on C-81 (we did the south to north route). Worthy of doing if you are heading to or from the Petoskey area. Narrow road, interesting house, nice vistas, and obviously a tunnel of trees for close to 20 miles.
We have driven this road between Harbor Springs and Cross Village many times over the years and will no doubt experience it many more times as well. My favorite seasons to see it are fall and winter on one of the crystal clear sunny northern Michigan days - spectacular.
The drive through the Tunnel of Trees was very beautiful with picturesque views of Lake Michigan and the beautiful lakefront homes. The drive is about 20 miles long starting in Harbor Springs. The road winds along the lake, but it is narrow, has lots of traffic, including trucks and campers, cars, bicycles, joggers and pedestrians, and there are some very sharp curves. Worth the drive but you will need plenty of time and patience.
We took a little side trip between Traverse City and Mackinaw City and drove through the tunnel of trees (Harbor Springs to Cross Village). This winding little road through the forest with glimpses of Lake Michigan was wonderful. It will take you a little time, as you can only drive 25-35 MPH, but the scenery, houses and lake views are worth the drive. There are many places where the trees envelope the road. Beautiful. If you are traveling north be aware the road markings at Cross Village for C-66 are nearly non-existent. Even with GPS we were not certain we were on the correct road for a few miles as we departed the Tunnel of Trees. The road signs call C-66 by the name Levering Road. Levering is the name of the town you will end up at before getting back on Hwy 31. If you have the time, this scenic route is highly recommended.
Rode this 2014 08 18, within 2 weeks of riding 'Tail of the Dragon" THIS IS THE BETTER RIDE for motorcyclists. A scenically stunning ride through some gentle rolling countryside. When there is a break in the trees you are afforded a glimpse of Lake Michigan. Otherwise, you feel enveloped by the canopy of trees. I have no idea why we saw no motorcyclists on our trek, but did see some bicyclists. Perhaps the owners of the high end real estate along this route have enough sway to discourage this from becoming another Tail of Dragon. In any case, if you are a motorcyclist, put this run on your bucket list, before the crotch rocket crowd finds out about it, and ruin it for all. We came on at Harbour Springs and took it up to Cross Village. Approx 30 kms- which makes it about 10 kms longer than Tail of Dragon. If in Cross Village, we were told to make sure we visited Legg's Inn. It seemed an interesting place however we did not go in. I would love to do this ride in the fall when the leaves are in colour. We were told it would take 20 to 30 mins "at most" by a local. It took us almost an hour as we stopped to take pictures along the way. There is plenty of room along the side of this road to pull over safely. Not like Tail of Dragon. I plan on doing this run again, only next time I will take even longer and linger over some of sights along the way. This could be a great romantic couples car ride. Leave the kids (and minivan) behind. Have a quiet scenic ride and top it off with a (reportedly) fine meal at Legg's Inn.
